1.4 BHC - Stubborn engine related noise ...

And have you checked this fuel pipe with silencer ?
No I haven't check this fuel pipe yet. I'll put my phone next to the pipe all around and record the video to confirm. If it's the pipe it'll be pretty obvious from vibration you can see and hear.

Hmm - I was just thinking how to check this pipe alone - I might just try to do it with a phone :)

So a little update:

I went under my A2 yesterday for further investigation - still did not found any reasonable source for the rattle (when standing in front of the car with the bonnet out, or lying below the engine compartment the rattle is either impossible to distinguish from the engine noise or not there...).

Tried to press/hold/watch the fuel hose with the silencer on it - but this has no effect on the rattle (i.e. when the rattle is there, squeezing this hose does not effects it).

Definitely it is not sourced from the gearbox area...

The only suspicious thing I noticed it that the auxiliary belt tensioner pulley very very close to the metal timing belt cover element - I have to investigate is further ...

Take drive belt off and see if its still present, have you checked alternator pulley?

Blast! When you did timing belt did you do the water pump too? Clutching at straws really but have known water pumps to make a similar noise but usually it's not long after that things develop catastrophically so doubt it really

Water pump was changed together with the timing and oil pump chain …
I was sure that this rattle came from this chain but replacing it together with the tensioner and sprockets changed nothing …

How many silencers do you have on your hose? I believe there were two versions. Earlier cars had just one and then later they added another one. I think that's the reason why this simple rubber hose cost over 100 quid

I have the single silencer one …

If this was a real issue and for Dave it certainly was, then why wouldn't folk like myself with AMF motors and presumably with single silences suffer with it, do they fail internally I wonder?

I have similar feeling about this …
If mine with a single silencer is rattling than this silencer must have failed …

I have to give it a good think through before I invest 10% of car value in a fuel hose …

My 2004 bhc got hose with two silencers and I never had this problem except sometimes very very rarely in very cold weather I can hear it that distinctive rattle for a second or two and it's gone. My second bhc early 2003 got just one and I guess that second silencer helps absorb the rattle. I'm sure this is a design flaw and under certain condition each car with only one silencer will develop this annoying fault. There is a guy who managed to fix the rattle with wrapping the hose in some kind of foam wrap. Apparently it works so worth trying before we spend 120£ for a new upgraded version of this hose. Second option is to get one from breakers for quarter of the price of new one

This is interesting reading this. I have had 2 BHC engines and both have done exactly this noise, especially the first one, and especially when it was cold. The other one does it, but it’s much less noticeable. The AMF engines never do it🤷‍♀😨

Yes there are lot of people with this problem with BHCs engines. It's funny how even audi when you translate description of the hose itself, they call it "Noise insulation hose"

I don't think it does any particular damage when it vibrates but it's rather annoying that's for sure. I'm very tempted to just swap the hoses between my two cars and see if it goes away.

Ok - I am convinced now to buy the hose with two silencers …
As it is only available from Audi Tradition it will take about a month to get it :(

I will report the result :)

I'm now pretty sure, new house will fix it for you.
