Get it scanned. The compressor runs all the time, even when AC is off. Variable vanes, (electrically controlled), regulate flow rate, (about 5% with AC off). driven from the aux belt, no clutch.
Mac.

Means the fan on the cendensor. With econ mode off and set to lo, the fan should come on under bonnet.
Whe you had gas checked was the system running and cycling through temps? as sometimes it only picks up one side of system,, when working the gas then get diluted across the other side of system. (Hi low pressure sides)

If the gas pressure is okay, and fan under bonnet is working, stick probe in the vents and see what temps you're getting. A good system should achieve 4-6 deg c at the dash vent on low.

So finally got round to this now summers here just changed the ac compressor and gassed it up still mot working, is there some pressure switches somewhere if so where

You need to be clear if its compressor(front of engine) or condensor (rad) you changed?

When you changed the item was system. Empty or have some pressure in it?

You need to scan the system with vcds too for clues.

Did it hold pressure or vacuum before you gassed it?

Did you have uv dye put in to trace leaks?

Lots to consider with ac.

I think the pressure sensor is on the front condensor rad behind bumper top right.
Check fuse 38 10A

It's possible the fan controller is broken so simply doesn't fire up. Not sure if this would trigger a code though woukd have tonsearch it.

The pressure sensor does fail - I've had 2, one on my project car and one on my other half's car. When they fail properly with some form of short, they result in fuse 38 burning out which in turn takes out the power steering controller - on the first this was the case and the sensor broke up when I was trying to remove the connector revealing massive corrosion - and the other half was irreversibly corroded onto the condensor (which I also replaced). On the other one, it was just registering as "Open to (ground or positive, I can't remember), Sporadic", and on this one it was possible to unscrew the old sensor and replace it.

If it fails, the a/c doesn't emit cool air ; I don't remember it simply causing "Econ" to be on all the time.

I changed compressor, pressure was fine no leaks ,nothing showing on vcds

We've realised recently that there is no label file for HVAC in the VCDS Lite, so the HVAC can't be effectively scanned. There is a label file in full VCDS, albeit, it's in German.
Which version of VCDS are you using?
As a general guide, if a controller scan results in no DTCs, a look at a few measuring blocks is the next move, to see if the values, temperature, pressure, etc, make sense.
Mac.
The German language label file, for use with Lite is available, for download, in another recent air con thread.
