78.8mpg. Audi A2 2005 1.4tdi

There is no one else I can share this with as my wife just gives me that "really, seriously?" look.

I thought the first time I got 77.4mpg was a fluke but today I filled up after an almost 600 mile one tank drive from the Fraserburgh (Scotland) to Lake District to Clevedon (Bristol) and just beat my personal best by 1.4mpg to get 78.8mpg.

I'm now the best in my class on fuelly, whoohooo.
Though that's not saying much as there is only 11 of us there. :-(

Is this good for a 1.4 TDI?

Maybe it was something Tony at A2 cars did?
If it was, thank you Tony!

Funny you say that about your wife. Mine says " or right that's good "

78.8mpg is fantastic for our cars. And even so this time of year, I'm sure most would agree.

You'll find yourself trying to better your last mpg every time you fill up. Or that could just be me.

Happy motoring

Ross

Excellent OP. My wife is the same, couldn't care. Always wants to drive faster,.. Not efficiently. I used to be the same tho. I'm finding the cold weather/short journeys terrible for mpg right now, so instead I'm trying to drive a bit harder in the dry to explore the grip and handling.

Very true. I have a scangauge installed to show me the REAL coolant temperature. I don't know about the a2 but generally all cars lie about the coolant temp. When in the middle my car shows about 70c and it took ages to get up to that. After some grill blocking it heats up much much quicker and will get to 88-89c after a little while on the dual carriageway.

I hope to get cruise control fitted and a longer 5th to nudge up my economy.

I am always filled with scepticism regarding these high mpg claims. This is based on my own experiences ... I have very rarely exceeded 60 mpg. I got mid 60's mpg when having to keep my steady speed to around 60mph . I don't like that speed and usually will tolerate 68/70 mph. 77.4 mpg? Absolutely no way, IMHO!

Ive had around 78mpg in a previous A2tdi 90. I will try and find an old thread i may have quoted it in.

The A2 diesels i had returned better mpg than my A1 tdi.

I absolutely agree with that.

On a motorway run at reasonable speeds I was getting 44MPG from my 1.6 tdi A1. (caused by the diesel "re-gen"
On other runs I might just squeeze 55MPG. But over 17K miles it averaged 50 MPG, so it wasn't bad but the A2 is easily more economical.

The maths doesn't lie, though. I frequently get 70mpg from unmodded TDIs with plenty of weighty spec' and broad, heavy wheels. In an A2 without the weighty optional extras, running on 15" wheels and kept to an indicated 60mph (which is probably more like 57mph), high 70s can be achieved with only a little effort.

I use my weighty TDI for a variety of journeys. I wish I didn't have to use it to do journeys shorter than 10 miles, but I do. As such, my average isn't particularly stellar; despite posting high figures after long trips on the motorway, my average probably hovers around the 65mpg mark. But I find that even when a tank of fuel is consumed quickly by the nature of my journeys, I never average less than 55mpg. I'd be inclined to ask why you don't average over 60mpg more frequently.

Cheers,

Tom

Yes, i remember the A2 was very easy to get a high mpg, where as the A1, you had to work very hard to get a decent return.

DPF filters are a nightmare on modern diesels. .(

I've managed the low 70s a couple of times but it's required very careful management and I've done the 5th gear and aero mods. Very impressive!

When on long M'way and dual carriageway journeys where speed is kept relatively constant and low, high MPGs are achievable, fuelly and or old fashioned maths will prove this. While DIS isn't the last word in accuracy, it's not a million miles out.

On a trip from mine to south London without cruise (~250 miles), and without any haste I managed to get an indicated 77 MPG, and when checked with fuelly was still mid to low 70s.

So with a lighter car, fewer people/luggage and maybe narrower tyres made especially for reduced rolling resistance much more is feasible IMO.

WOW, that's is a fantastic figure David - well done mate!

David, all I did was to convince you not to return the car to the seller and have faith that we can restore your A2, making it the reliable and fantastic little car that we all know it to be.

Thank you for placing your trust in me, your reward is the satisfaction and smile this puts on your face and of course sharing sharing these excellent results :D.

Hi all,

There are no mods on the car, though there is a pending cruise control fitting.

I don't have a DIS either, though I originally wanted one I think I don't really need it.
My car also doesn't have fog lights.

The only thing I have done is to turn off the air con.
I have 15" wheels which were set at the higher pressure as listed in the back of the diesel filler cover.

I'll be taking another long trip soon (without family and suitcases) and will see if I can crack the 80mpg mark by removing the rear seats.

As for driving style I am a believer in the clutch down technique while coming up to roundabouts, red traffic lights and stationery traffic all at slow speeds.
I suppose both of my high mpg top scores were possibly due to very big hilly journeys through the Cairngorms and Lakes?

I suppose this is a form of cheating as the car will be in idle for short spaces of time. When I wasn't trying this technique I was getting 65-68mpg.
Though it's interesting how much extra you can get by "coasting".

When the wife does the school run the best she got (though she couldn't give a crap about mpg) was 52-55mpg.
The other thing was that I added the redex diesel additive.

I do want to try a few aero mods though and maybe the 5th gear mod. But at the mo my car needs new rear suspension and a pending drive shaft replacement so this will be a dream for now.

You coast with the engine idling, as opposed to being in gear? I do both, but seem to get better results in gear, using engine braking. I believed this was due to the engine not using fuel, as it does when idling...

As I have said on this Forum before, I just like to enjoy a journey at reasonable speed and not to become obsessed with eking-out every every last drop of fuel. I have, however, taken to "free-wheeling" a bit, recently. I am surprised how easily the car progresses with little drop in speed! And my DIS shows a slight improvement in average mpg ... I think that even if my life depended on it, I couldn't get these ultra-high mpg's! Over 80 mpg ??!! I wonder what the ideal cruising speed might be, for best mpg? 50-55 mph? That would be almost unbearable to me! The only way to accurately check the mpg is true "brim-to-brim" Maybe some mistakes might have been made in making these incredible mpg claims?

There's no doubt that getting the MPG figures that are significantly above 60ish is hard, and is significantly influenced by driver behavior and the duty cycle of your regular journeys. I think the A2's inherent efficiency means it's relatively easy to get low to mid 50s regardless of how you drive it, but doing better than that requires effort, planning (to avoid or at least minimise car use for short, stop-start journeys) and if you're that way inclined, mods.
