Latest mod - rear parking sensors

As we got a new rear bumper from A2Steve in the correct colour to replace the scratched one we had i purchased the Cobra sensor kit To compliment my sons A2 whilst the bumper was off, it came with painted sensors in Azur blue.
The kit itself is very good with a little speaker that we placed behind the removable panel for the rear lights, so everything is totally out of sight. It’s simply wired into the reversing lights and ground.

Whilst the bumper was off I took the opportunity to seal the vents with black silicone:

The wires are passed through the center grommet:

The new bumper fitted:

The sensors themselves simply stick on from behind, the hole is created with a punch that is also purchased from Cobra, they are a very good fit and look very professional:

So that was that. They work perfectly, beeping once when reverse gear is selected and then beeping as you approach an object until they constantly bleep at a distance of 1 foot.

My son can now reverse with confidence once he passes his driving test and hopefully keep the bumper looking good.

That's a good job you've done Ian. I 've been meaning to fit sensors after once scratching the bump on a rather foul night with torrential rain. I was going to replace the vents at the same time but it looks like that is not needed, just putting mastic round the edges. What mastic did you use?

I just used Dow Corning 781 in black. Apply the mastic then spray with a water/fairy liquid solution and smooth with your finger dipped in fairy liquid.

Some great work yet again Ian and co... the kit looks very OEM something I’m considering as the OEM retrofit kit is ridiculously expensive.. do you have a link to this kit by any chance ?

Cheers

Thanks bud. £143 painted and with the punch tool isn't too bad.

I think Darren C also fitted these and found them good.

You could postal rent the punch tool too

Happy to send the punch to whoever needs it as it’s useless to me now.

That's kind of you. Maybe it can be a condition that whoever get's it also passes it on. When I get around to doing this I would like to borrow it and happy to pass it on. We can keep track of it's whereabouts in this thread.

You can get the "same" ones from aliexpress. Flush mount ones, OEM style, very discreet. The supplied mounts allow for different thickness bumpers and they work a treat after 4 years of fitting. I think I got two sets for 60 squids or so.

Looks a great result. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Do you have any showing how you did the wiring? Paul

No more pictures I'm afraid, but the wiring is literally a live wire to the reversing lights and a ground. The parking sensors all go back to a control box and the speaker plugs into that. Everything is plug and play apart from the live and ground.

Ian, where does the grommet hole enter in the boot - does any panels need removing? I ask as I'm getting the bumper sprayed professionally and the guy is fitting the sensors for no extra charge, so I want to mimimise his work by removing any panels. Afterwards I will wire them up and configure.

Also, I wonder if anyone knows what the cable is in the photo below, to the right of the crash bar. Perhaps an impact sensor?

The grommet in the dead centre of the rear panel enters the boot above the lower boot floor and behind the plastic trim that runs the full width of the boot shut panel. So you will need to remove the plastic trim panel on the inside of the boot (behind the chrome trim) to access the cables.
The cable at the right hand side of the rear panel in the picture is some sort of sensor, maybe temp sensor?

Not outside temperature sensor unless more then one of them.

An excellent picture of the location of the outside temperature sensor is here.

Ian (Kleynie) has kindly sent me his punch for fitting the parking sensors :)

I'm happy to pass it on once mine have been fitted in late September.

Alan,

Have you used the punch tool yet or are you waiting to use it. The reason I ask is due to me needing to have o e in my hand for a few hours to examine the cutting profile surface whilst I grind my 23mm sheet metal punch so it can do the same job as what Ian recently done.

If you’re not using it for a week or 2 would you be able to send it to me (I’ll pay recorded delivery each way via PayPal) so I can get this 23mm punch ready to attack my bumper. I have the tool and bench grinder here ready to go. I could have it back to your letter box in under a week.

Kind regards,

Tom
