Turbo Failure

So on my way back to London the inevitable happened and it seems my 1.4tdi AMF's Turbo packed up - it is very squealy and there is a loss of power. It has come obviously at the worst time for me lol as I need my car!!!

Are there any upgrades for the Turbo on these cars just want to check if there's anything that may boost performance and is a straight change over?

any ideas and recommendations help is appreciated. Thanks

This Ebay store is a dismantler who has AMF turbos etc, but I would imagine no particular guarantee they are any better than yours except they've not gone bang yet. Also not cheap compared with A2oc suppliers - but very few diesel cars come through the dismantler pipeline here -

For TDi performance parts -

Alternatively (depending on how badly lunched it is) - could you send the turbo away to be refurbished? I would imagine bolting a different turbo on would require the map you already have to be modified to suit its characteristics rather than being plug and play.

Gosh thanks that did not even cross my
Mind - thanks for that. I did email a company yesterday who supply parts for refurb to hear costs etc - I guess I have to start by getting all open and getting the turbo off so can assess the damage done. Should be fun as it will be a first for me. I am considering buying another complete engine and slowly rebuilding it and pull mine out at some point for a refurb too and using the other turbo in the mean time but Did not even thing about how it would affect the remap so thanks for that ???? This week I am off to Isle of Wight with work and work had to get me train tickets and then week after I am free to start working on RED and will update you ?? Thanks again for taking the time.

It took seconds to type the above - I'm not an expert but those were just things that came to mind after a lot of reading here over the past 18 months. Best of luck with the fix!

Wow started reading that will take time to finish it - LOOKS - VERY INTERESTING thanks for that! Me and RED are in for the long haul I hope so something to look at in the future :)

Mine was fine at 125k until it ingested a glow plug tip that broke off. Hoping it will do another 125k!

Simon.

Hi Simon, just out of interest what was the damage for the reman of your turbo through them?

It was £270 to rebuild. The way they work is you send them the turbo and they strip it and give you a quote based on what they find. If you decide not to go ahead then they send the bits back at your cost.

Simon.

thanks for that Simon. Did you remove and fit your turbo yourself or did you get someone to do it for you?

Their reply to me.....
Good morning Bob,

Prices start at £185+V.A.T for us to rebuild your turbocharger, which is like a service, a replacement of seals and bearings and removal of carbon build up.

Alternatively if you have core damage we can fully re-manufacture the turbocharger, this unit is £275+V.A.T.

We can hybrid the original turbo unit for an additional £150+vat this includes us fitting a larger billet compressor wheel and machining the necessary housings. Gains of around 20% are the expected from our hybrid turbo units.

We can arrange for a free collection and delivery of the turbo unit and the unit comes back as good as new with a two year warranty with unlimited mileage.

All you need to do is get it taken off and boxed securely, we take it from there.

If you have any additional questions please don't Hesitate to ask.

Kind Regards,
Midland Turbo

My project peppa used a hybrid turbo. The power gains combined with the noise is quite addictive.
