Windscreen decal

Can anyone tell me what the purpose is of the black semicircle decal at the bottom of the windscreen. It’s stuck to the outside. I’m tempted to remove it as it obstructs the view of anything low to the ground closer than 8m away

The reason I ask is because my dad had an A2 years ago when they were new and his had the same decal There is no damage under it

In all my years of working on A2s, I have never seen this before. It's certainly non-standard.

Cheers,

Tom
I believe you are correct and the sweetie mice have been running through my head. I can’t find any other photos of this online ?

If Tom's never seen one, it makes me wonder ...

... It couldn't be your dad's old car you've bought by any chance, could it?
No, it has had 2 lady owners from new. I have a 1" thick stack of invoices and MOT certificates including the Sales Quality Assessment when the car left the showroom. It was just my mind playing tricks on me lol

Is it to cover a groove caused by a failing wiper arm? Or to prevent one?
No, the screen is unmarked. I can see it from inside and it's nowhere near the wiper. It's had 2 lady owners from new so it's a mystery as to why it's there. I'll remove it at the weekend. Heat gun will make short work of it :)

Well I just removed the decal. It came off quite easily, revealing a lovely crack in the windscreen. The mystery is solved. There is no stone damage which is why it wasn’t visible from the inside with the decal applied. Some idiot has dropped the wiper arm while changing the blade and the metal end cracked the screen. I do have windscreen cover but there’s an £80 excess. I’m in contact with the used car dealer that I bought the car from to see if they will pay the excess since it was obviously like this when I bought the car

Maybe the dealer applied the decal?

No it had been there for some time by the effort it took to remove, even with a heat gun. They are paying the excess for me to have the screen replaced. I’m happy with that. The old screen looks original and has the usual tiny marks all over it from stones. I’ll have a new screen and will only cost me the time it takes to replace it ?

Thumbs up for the dealer - provided you didn't have to twist his arm too much.

Try to get an OEM replacement. In my first A2 I had to replace my windscreen twice and the last one was made in China (Y something) and it was substandard, i.e. you could see it was slightly deformed, despite the insurer claiming it was OEM standard.

Thanks, good to know. It's Auto Windscreens doing it. I'll be watching them do it. I will be interested to see how well it fits as they offer it up to the frame

Just be careful if using your insurance if they ask you when the damage happened

I didn't even have to speak to the insurance company. Their phone menu system booted me directly to Auto Windscreens. I don't think they care when it was damaged but I said it just happened anyway
