Hi all had an impulse buy - girl in London paying £500 month isurance selling her A2 1.4 petrol converted to LPG. Car was in decent nick for 2001 so I gave her the asking price £495 . Car had Brakes Abs ASR lights on but drove home ok . In process of maintenance jobs changed Brake pads, ordered ABS cable ,fitted abs sensor . Loads of info on here Thx.

Welcome. Yes, they hide their age well. If you haven't already read about wishbones then check them. Yours may be cast though the pressed ones have been causing more issues of late, some failing soon after an mot.

It's a 2001 car, so hopefully it will have the original cast wishbones.

Most likely though entirely possible a previous owner has changed to pressed given the cost. I don't believe any of the cast options had replaceable ball joints.

Thx guys for the heads up wishbones. When I said impulse buy I had been looking for a suitable A2 for conversion or converted to lpg for 2 years . When this one came up I was on the train that night. Girl was more interested in telling me about the radio and the coffee cup holders

LPG converted A2's are VERY rare! You've got at least a £1500 conversion, there! I've run LPG converted cars since the 1970's! I'v always done my own conversions, too. My other car is a Mercedes SLK and I've converted that to LIQUID propane injection. I'm North Wales ... were exactly are you? I'd really like to see your LPG converted A2.

Is this a fact that cast wishbones cannot have their ball joints changed as this is a big factor fir buying a second hand pair ???can someone confirm this ..

Yes that's true, the ball joint is not removable on cast wishbones. If you can't get them new then I the only place I would buy (and have bought) secondhand is on here.

I live in Pembrokeshire not far from Tenby. I have an lpg car in Thailand -my interest in lpg was aroused when I was in a Bangkok Toyota taxi which had 750,000 km on the clock 3 new clutches 2 new gearboxes but running like a watch. It seems the key is to keep under 3000 revs as lpg runs hotter. That is why LPG is not a success with white van man.

Couple of pics. The spare is in the boot area as the lpg tank is below. ecotech conversion engine is AUA

Hi how do you get to battery jack etc is there a bayonet fitting for quick release ..any other info ..I like the idea ??
The jack/wheel brace is to the left hand side of the car to the rear of the battery. Battery access is tight but manageable. The lpg fill point is in the rear bumper on the drivers side corner. Fill pot on my a4 lpg and a2

A problem with the use of "doughnut" LPG storage tanks is the limited capacity and therefore range. The range is also reduced on a volumetric basis compared to petrol because of the charge density of propane. You therefore lose about 20% range compared to petrol. I feel that, should I have converted an A2 to propane, I would have devised a way to fit the largest possible cylinder tank, even at the expense of loss of luggage space. I would have regained that space (for holiday use), by fitting a rack-mounted storage box.

When I bought it it was out of lpg. I filled up in chievely (24.8 litres )on the way home. Currently 200 miles on that with the guage still showing a third full.

This car has previously been to me with a previous owner. From memory, doesn’t the boot floor split in half to access the tools?

That's remarkable ..... astonishing, in fact!

David
It is factual but I would need to record litres and mileage over a much longer period to be certain. it is however consistent with another a2 on here doing 53mpg on lpg. Quote
The figure is real but glossy.

It was a long boring run back from Cornwall and mostly pretty flat. I used the price I would pay if back home. Best case scenario to figure out what was possible.

I don't like to think about it to much as I want to drive my car the way I like. Round here it is pretty hilly too.

I used a figure of 138ppl (is that correct?) Divided by 56ppl = 2.464.... X 53mpg =130mpg Wow
