Today I changed my A2’s gearbox oil. Deeply satisfying despite it taking me about 4.5 hours.
Challenges
- Jacking the front is easy, straight on to axle stands. As soon as the rear is jacked up, there is a slight movement at the front. ☹ Sleepers strategically placed at the jacking points, car resting on axle stands and jack points, the car was solid even when deliberately trying to move it so now happy to go underneath.
- The under tray, why why why do we have Phillips, torx and hex head screws, annoying but fortunately had the tools, not sure if that’s a previous owner/garage or supposed to be like that.
- Located the drain and filler, got the filler open easily (oil comes out here so very full) however the drain is obscured by components so my torque wrench didn't fit, needed and extension bit and a small wrench with extension handle - found one so managed to undo it.
- Refilled oil, about 1.7 litres went in however about 1.8 came out. That’s as much as I managed to get in and really glad I had the back of the car up too so was brimmed. Syringe I bought was too slow so a garden hose with funnel (came with srynge) worked a treat filling from the top. Brown oil out, pale yellow in.
Everything back on, no parts left over (always a good sign) and nothing injured, damaged or broken in the process. Very happy considering I’m no mechanic. ?
Whilst I was under took a few pictures and everything seems mechanically sound, the only exception being the wishbones which have a fair amount of corrosion on them. I think they are okay for the time being, what are people’s thoughts?
