59mpg

I've not had my 75bhp TDi long but I've been blown away by the fuel economy.
The last two weeks of commuting have returned just over 59 mpg based on the trip meter and fuel receipt. Just under 400 miles and hadn't hit the fuel light :)

What have car makers been doing for 20 years if this was possible in 2003?

Making petrol cars match the diesel economy? To be fair, my tdi, when driven with some spirit returns 47 average. Sure on a run it was doing an indicated 62-66 mpg but I never believe the DIS. There must be some relation to me fitting a blueline kit, rear bar and 45 profile rubber that has affected the economy...?

My commute does involve travelling the 50mph length of the M27 where they are making the motorway 'smart' but there have been some short shopping trips and a couple of days where I went the non motorway route and didn't particularly hang about.

A2’s weren’t cheap when they came out. Indeed I spent £19k on a specced up one in 2001 when I bought my first TDI 75 new.

At the time you could get a VW Polo/golf or equivalent that might have done 20 mpg less but the price difference got you heck of a lot of fuel. You therefore had to be an A2 aficionado and the small car buyer at the time wouldn’t typically spend that much money, engineering excellence or not.

Thankfully lots of us did and they are the prize possessions we have now and not nearly as common as your humdrum polo or golf. A2 owners have definitely had the last laugh.

I wish I had taken notice back in the day, I had an S3 and a 2.7 A6 estate but neither lasted (although were lots of fun), I would definitely have had an FSi or TDi90 Papaya Colour storm with some tasty options, however in 2001 it would have been a Jaipur but the same idea :)

It was a mind bender for me as I traded a Lotus Elise in for it, polar extremes if ever.

Lotus was too expensive to insure and the following year I was going to do 30k miles of personal mileage.

My mates thought I was nuts but there was no way I was going to do that mileage in an Elise and every other car was a bit too mainstream.

Weirdly I still have an 1998 Elise which I've done > 100k miles in, most of them in the first 10 years I owned it.

It barely does 1,000 miles a year now though as it's no fun on a motorway commute and I've Sorned it right now. Actually pretty cheap to ensure on a 5,000 mile policy.

On Sunday, I travellelled to East London, to collect a set of 9 spoke wheels & tyres. I went via M3, M25, M11, about 86 miles, and back via North Circular, M25 & M3. Round trip of about 155 miles. The outward leg was fast (too fast to mention here), while the return was much slower.
The consumption for the trip was 50.2 mpg. Not too bad for a diesel, but pretty good, for a FSI!
Mac.

I'd have said that for a 75 you will get better than 59mpg average.

I don't know that's true, if you're on sport wheels that knocks the mpg.
Also are we talking "true" av mpg or "pub p#$$ing rights" IE - resetting the DIS on the motorway, foot off coasting downhill to get that 128 mpg figure to start with or resetting at the fuel station with 10 cold starts in a week?

This was real MPG based on mileage and litres of fuel, my car doesn't have the information on the dash.

I reckon it could have been better as there were quite a few short journeys from cold to go to she shops or ferry kids around.

I was 22 years old at the time and a slightly less desirable postcode, when insurance became prohibitive then it had to go.

My current e class is the best motorway mile muncher I’ve owned, I’ve drive a few s-classes but don’t need a car that flash, I do however need an estate.

my remapped TDI75 with EGR deleted and machined out, long 5th gear and 15" A1 wheels hits 59mpg in winter and 64 in summer on my regular commute to work 8miles each way and little of that is over 35mph - which I think is awsome especially when the webasto is sipping the diesel as well
Get it on the motorway, I regularly run from st annes to york or barnsley stick to 68 to 72 mph and I'm looking at mid 70's more if I drop the speed to 60, but rarely can I keep to that :)

Hello fellow M27 plodder. It surprises me your not getting higher with the roadworks. That too is my daily commute I average about 65 mpg which I put down being restricted to the 50 mph

Maybe I could get more if I had a full week of motorway, I commute from Chichester to Hursley (near Winchester) so if the traffic is bad I route through Bishops Waltham or, if it's really bad, through Denmead and the Morestead road. The car also gets used for quite a few short journeys to ferry kids around.

Assuming it passes it's MOT this month I'll get a replacement front under tray as mine is missing, that might help a tiny bit :)

I bought my gf a 2002 tdi75. She is a fitness instructor and does quite a lot of miles going from health club to health club. Wanted a funky car that is good on fuel. Did a reasonably accurate mpg check and bang on 60mpg mix of motorway and urban. Bloody amazing. £30 a year road tax is a nice little bonus too.
