Exhaust

Has anyone just chopped the backbox off to see how it stands performance and sound wise without doing anything else. I have a remapped 1.4tdi and hoping for better results if there is more air flow.
Or is Isolation giving me too much time to come up with bad ideas?
Cheers

It'll certainly be noisier and (assuming you escape the attention of the constabulary in the meantime) likely result in a fail at your next MOT.

You're right on the doorstep of Infinity Exhausts:

Why not ask them to quote for a partial system?

They were my first go to shop, however I don’t want it to cost the earth. I’ve had another quote for from cat back just straight pipe and he says it will more than likely pass mot. So for the time being I just wanted to test the water to see if I get a gain or a loss from it before spending lots of money

I can see that you're young. Before you have any modification to your exhaust, you definitely need to confirm with your insurance company that it would be acceptable.

That’s true, do you think it would run better with it cut off for the time being? I don’t mind if I don’t get too much noise just a little bit more kick in the lower rev range.

I'm afraid I've no idea. I simply don't know what state your current exhaust is in.

I had Infinity build me a new exhaust for my (petrol) A2 in 2018. The difference it made was night and day, and it was very reasonably priced for what I got. I specifically travelled across the country to get them to do the work because of their reputation.

Removing the innards of the cat is supposed to help The turbo spool quicker and blank egr on manifold before modding the exhaust thats what i would do, will all look stock too so wont generate potential problems

The age of the A2’s mean that at least on the diesel variants you could remove the cat without failing an MOT and this is likely to give you a much better increase in power than removing the silencers, but why do so?

I’ve had a powerful A2 in the past (160bhp) and whilst quite good fun, the A2 just isn’t designed to be a fast car.

I’ve learned to just appreciate the A2 for what it is rather than trying to make it something it’s not.

In summary, if you want a quick/fast car, but a fast car in the first place

Bang on

Chaps, this is a 17 year old lad who wants to play with proper / old school cars, he presumably cannot afford to insure a fast car. Let’s be supportive and humour him.

@Ryan D - You must do what you will, but the most important thing is to be safe and to be legal; that means checking wiIth your insurance company before you do anything (if you wait until after you’ve modded the exhaust and they say they won’t cover you, you’ll be stuffed).

Been there done that, wish I hadn't as my elders advised at the time........... but with cars it's a fact of life that you can only learn by your own mistakes and no one else's.
The cycle will repeat itself and in years to come he will no doubt be relating similar stories to the new kids on the block

Cheers Spike..........now where did I put my hacksaw

How did you do it Spike? Did it have any negatives other than noise? I 100% agree with your theory of saying the same in a few years to come however it’s a scratch I have to itch. Once I’ve tried it I won’t need to try it again. Thanks

If you want to boy racer it sell the A2 and get a Lupo. Unmolested A2s starting to be thin on the ground. Appreciate the A2 for what it is or sell it and move on.

More a2s for sale than lupos for sale at the moment amazingly

Not on the A2.
I'm going back about 50 years when I had a 1275 MG Midget and put a 3 branch manifold and straight through exhaust on it. It sounded very powerful - ie Loud (great at the time) and I was convinced it would be 10mph faster. Alas, a drag race against a friend with a bog standard car showed there was next to no improvement.

Back to your TDi. The factory exhaust is in one piece and for a replacement back box, the pipe needs to be cut in a specific place and the new tailpipe section fitted with a special sleeve clamp from Audi. Cut your pipe in the same location so your existing back box or a replacement unit can be re-fitted in the future. You may need to extend the exhaust to the back of the car to prevent the risk of fumes being drawn into the cabin or blow onto fuel / brake pipes or anything plastic.

The standard exhaust is not that restrictive and I'm sure Timmus retained the standard system on his TDI 120 project engine
