The Definitive Alloy Wheel Picture thread (Alloys)

On sports wheels, the previous owner had 45s on, and it damaged the wheel liner on the rear

That's good to know.

I've heard lot's of folk on here say they're running 205/45's without problems but tbh i personally have never tried this size.

I wonder if yours was a standard sport model with the slightly lower suspension and maybe others are using them on an SE and they are ok?

I have used 215/40's and they were fine and offered a little extra rim protection which was nice.

I must admit i do try to stick to standard factory specified sizes but if i do go larger for any reason it's normally just one size up in the width (not the depth) which has never caused a problem?

One thing i would add is all tyres are different and although two tyres might be the same size one could rub and one could be fine due to their shape and design.

Some tyres are more rounded at the shoulders for arch/suspension clearance, other are squarer and could catch.

Some also offer rim protectors which make them appear wider even though they are the same size which could also cause fouling.

Most of the latest high performance tyres tend to have rounded shoulders as most modern high performance cars are wearing larger diameter wheels nowadays and require this to enable them to fit.

I guess the common sense advise would be to be careful and do your homework and avoid any size where others have experienced a problem as that means it must be pretty close and possibly too close for comfort ?

Morning all,

Has anyone tried these on an A2 yet:

I know they’ll require 5x100 to 5x112 adapters which @greywolfhound uses without issues.

The brushed aluminium finish looks rather nice on these.

Can anyone see any issues fitting these (ET42) with 20mm (5x100 to 5x112) adapters.

Project OEM might be after a set. They weigh just over 6kg naked which is only some 400g heavier than Pepperpots so not too bad.

Hoping these could fill out the arches a bit better than Pepperpots with spacers.

Let me know your thought please.

EDIT:
Just seen these mentioned by @Menno a few posts back.

Kind regards,

Tom

With a tyre they wouldn’t be far off a pepperpot, however adapters add weight

Thanks Edwards,

I forgot about the additional weight for the adapters, that said I’d be fitting spacers to Project OEM to beef up the Pepperpots anyway so nothing lost from my personal plans.

Is anyone handy with photoshop who could ‘put these on’ Project OEM or @audifan ’s Votex Azure Blue A2.

Kind regards,

Tom

Similar to this I’d guess?

Thank you Edward,

Give me an hour for the rain to stop and I’ll get a side profile view as don’t currently have on.

Thanks again for your help and advice.

Kind regards,

Tom

Yes menno has these on another set of his wheels ..he bought my first set for me ?...spacer/ adapters are alloy and do not weigh much at all .. Because obviously they’re near the centre of the wheel ..The weight to add on to wheel is negligible ..physics .

The mass might not add much to the polar moment of inertia but it will still add the full mass to the unsprung weight.

I’m not qualified enough to argue that point but I would say tyre profile and width would add more to unsprung weight maybe ?..
All I can say with personal experience of using these wheels car spins up a lot quicker than it did with the standard se wheels Even with wider tyres ..these lightweight alloys are 6.5 kilo not sure what se wheels weigh but I would think nearer 10 ? ..so a small alloy spacer would not equate to that difference .,

Afternoon all,

So here is an image (photoshopped by @Edwrai (thank you)) of Project OEM wearing these A8 D2 wheels:

The wheels aren’t blue, they are brushed aluminium but seem to have a blue reflection from the picture they were taken from. You’ll notice the correct colour at the 3 O’Clock position,

The above image came from these:

there is a long and complex thread on the German forum talking about the straight vs bowl thread bolts, the size of the curve and how difficult it was to find bolts that sat correctly and went through far enough for TÜV to be happy with it (and yes, they will count the threads that are turned). I cannot say what results were in the end as the hassle put me off.

I'm a fan of those wheels on an A8 but don't particularly like the look on the A2. Also: just how durable is the finish vs. winter salt?

Hi Bret,

I might just purchase a set anyway to see for myself. They can always be sold on if I decide they’re not for me.

Am I right in thinking the brushed aluminium wheels have a clear coat for protection? If they do and this clear coat is in good order (or re-applied) then I don’t think there would be any issues, only best guess though as I’ve not had this finish wheel before. Happy to take advice.

I must add though, that after living in Germany for some 15 years I know the winters can be more harsh there than we have seen in Leicestershire the last 5 years, how well do these types of wheel finishes cope where you are.

Kind regards,

Tom
