Evening all,

Quick update, the additional K-Line messaging module is now connected and I now have the OPS/PDC page appear when reverse is selected.

The work that has been undertaken to make this work is just incredible. I’ll do a full write up soon enough once I have finished home renovations but for now here are 2 images.

Picture 1 from Stuart’s RNS-E emulator (that you have seen before):
D3A7594E-5111-4CDF-8E80-8F16DF76627C.png

Picture 2 is my RNS-E this evening after playing with wires and updating a few things:
809A044F-EC12-4BD6-8409-6B3E28B63286.jpeg

The reason that there is no sensor proximity bars is due to the fact that I am still yet to remove the rear bumper and fit the sensors. Having this new functionality has certainly given me the motivation to get it done as soon as I have finished home renovations.

A fully write up will be posted soon as I have a few things to finished off but I think you’ll all be very interested (and absolutely amazed) to see what my RNS-E can now do after working with Stuart (RNSE PCBBC).

Kind regards,

Tom

Afternoon all,

Project OEM is a happy vehicle by all accounts. It’s just flew through its first MOT in my ownership. All the TLC it’s had over the lockdowns has paid off. I’m sure this is my first (out of 4) A2 that’s has come back without an advisory. Very happy.

I was looking for the additional pages as it’s just expected from personal experience. I know the tester is very thorough as he has picked up all sorts of things in the past on my previous commuters.

Kind regards,

Tom

Morning all,

Not much happened with this amazing A2 for a while. Some of you might have seen that I put a set of soft touch B Pillar buttons up for sale yesterday:

These are indeed from OEM but just fitted a set of hard touch buttons:

No real need to swap them but thought I’d go for a set that’ll last as long as I’d like to have OEM going.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening everyone,

I’ve been wanting to share this information with you for some weeks now about the latest firmware from Stuart and the Team over at
RNSE PCBBC. Firmware 280 has now been released. What can I say about it, just outstanding!

Here is a screen shot from their website where it can be downloaded, just look at the new features that our RNS-E units can now have:

Custom Splash Screen is something I’ve not played with yet as it wasn’t ready for my trial version but seems a great addition.

I have been trialling this in my A2 for about a month th now and here are a few pictures from when I first got it.

Album Art is just brilliant:

Rear PDC/OPS display if you have an Arduino or an 8P0 PDC Control Module:
499F24CC-3816-45F3-BBC5-6CA461AB26A6.jpeg

Yes I might have accidentally leaked this image before through sheer excitement.

The scrolling MP3 track name over the DIS is brilliant.
Latest maps running from a SD Card is just awesome, so quick to respond to a destination selection or a reroute, so much better than the disc drive chugging away:
38FBC83F-F0F5-4BA9-8FB2-64E358DF2AFD.jpeg

7 digit postcode database returns to us along with the latest speed cameras locations along with safety camera (mobile) locations. Utterly amazing. On the map content (ATMs, Airports, Services etcetera) now has a third option opposed to the tick or no tick. The new addition is a bell icon which gives an audible tone when you’re near a POI of your choosing. Main use is for the speed camera location database:

8D53A54A-B80E-4B52-95DC-8B26FF3B59F4.jpeg

After recently retrofitting the Audi BT Module and Audi AMI Module this firmware just makes my RNS-E PU so much more modern. It’ll never be touch screen but most other things you’d want it to do can be added so I’m absolutely content with all I have done and what the new firmware has added to my head unit.

The Maps on a SD Card is about 8-10GB and you can use the rest of the SD Card space for MP3s. There is also the option to add a 64GB SDXC Card of formatted in FAT32.

To make all features work there is a small charge which is minimal (£15 for 193 users and £10 for 192 users). I believe it is very cheap for what you’re getting. Due to the size of the Map data it cannot be used on the RNS-E Mk1 192 units. There is a different hardware inside the 192s so at this time going larger than the 4GB SD Card isn’t possible.

I’m certain that if you go ahead and choose to use m this latest firmware that you will not be disappointed.

Along with the purchase price you get a code to use NAVPOInt which allows you to make your own POIs for the maps. You can add your own speed camera locations along with other things. I’ve not used this yet as it is brilliant out of the box but will be something Ill get familiar with in due course.

I’ll update with more pictures over the next few days once I’ve played with the new Splash Screen functionality, quite excited.

Kind regards,

Tom

I’d like to add this update to mine, is it an easy install Tom?
I also like the idea of my maps being migrated to an sd card so I can use the dvd drive. How did you go about this? Thanks Darren ?

Evening Darren,

The firmware was a simple download from the linked website and I sent them an empty 32GB SD Card. Stuart put the maps on there and sent it back. Worked straight away. I’m not sure how they’re going about getting the Maps data to customers but assume it’s going to be another download.

I’ll respond with more information tomorrow along with (hopefully) results of how the Splash Screen works.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening all,

I hope you liked to see what is now possible with the RNS-E PU. As I didn’t have the updated Splash Screen option on the trial software I was blessed with I downloaded the latest firmware iteration this morning. I updated to said firmware on the way to work this morning, it installed just as simple and easy as all their versions have in the last.

So here goes, the new Splash Screen option really does work. I’ll try an actual picture of the amazing A2 another time but this is what was achieved after a couple of minutes tinkering to get the Club Logo the correct size and pixel count:

3BD4C7FE-E7BA-41FF-AF88-2CFDB3C80CBF.jpeg

I’m still amazed that these type of things are possible for my 8 year old head unit. Just brilliant. Like I said, I’ll get more imaginative in the coming days but for now I’m happy. Who doesn’t like a bit of club branding anyway.

EDIT:
Some of you may have seen this already on the ‘Today I...’ thread. I have so much to do here at 2Work Towers but I just had to return out a photograph as the Splash Screen, not perfect but I’ll sit down over the weekend and see what I can do. Here is the first attempt, which was literally seconds:
437A0FFF-391D-4631-83E3-E62C9E5886D7.jpeg

After a little bit of cropping I’m certain that I could easily get the picture looking much better and will probably add some text etcetera. This is certainly a nice new toy to play with.

Kind regards,

Tom

Perfect thank you. Now purchased.

Hi Tom,
That is amazing how quickly Stuart has managed to sort this & the images you’ve displayed are impressive, do you know if this will be possible on the 192 model as I’ve got a Bull on mine I would like to be able to replace.

Evening,

I think most features are available to 192 users But to check you need to click on the little link buttons for a description of each feature:
317D6452-17A6-4012-A30A-23D62224ABE9.jpeg

The main thing that will not work on a 192 unit is the maps running from a SD Card as the 192 unit currently is unable to take a SD Card large enough for the maps data.

I’m sure I will be able to answer any specific questions you have regarding on how to get certain features working on your RNS-E.

Not sure what the second part of your question means, what is the Bull you have on your RNS-E?

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,
That sounds hopeful then, & this is what I have on mine https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lamborghini_Logo.svg
Thanks
Keith

Hi Keith,

I remember our previous conversation now. To better answer this simply, yes you can change the Splash Screen on your Mk1 RNS-E 192. If you aren’t looking to go for the updated firmware you can quickly recode your RNS-E to show the standard splash screen. Do you have VCDS.

Here is an extract from the RNSE PCBBC Website which explains the process of using their firmware:
51202C69-3695-40D3-B909-3724A7E94FDB.jpeg

To very quickly convert any image for my Mk2 unit I downloaded ‘Pixillion’ which is a free picture file converter. Works perfectly for me and will also work for you.

Hope this helps out. If not just give me a call and I’ll gladly help out. I think I gave you my number on a recent PM. If not let me know.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening all,

I've still not had much time to play with any images to have a customised RNS-E Splash Screen. Is there anyone out there with more imagination than me as Im really stuck at what to have displayed. I'm not wanting to be too childish with this and would like it to look nice and subtle but at the same time not standard.

Happy to see any inspirational images added to this thread and I'll see if I can piece it all together and come up with something more bespoke to the A2.

After 2 minutes of adding some text to a splash screen I found online, this was tried:

(This image is a screen shot as I cannot add a .bmp image. All splash screens I make will be available to everyone if you're unable to make your own)

Evening all,

Very late I know but Ive only just cleaned up after a spot of DIY, here is something Ive been working on.

RNS-E Splash Screen:
1608249203422.jpeg

As much as I really like the customised splash screen, its quite difficult to come up with something bespoke without being childish and OTT whilst trying to keep it looking in keeping with our aluminium friends.

I'll leave it a few days before I have another go.

Kind regards,

Tom

And another attempt:
1608252131646.jpeg

Think I need to spend some money on Photoshop and see whats possible with more superior software than I am currently using.

Keep your ideas coming people as there has to be a nice looking subtle solution which I just cannot work out yet. Need inspiration from someone a little more imaginative.

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening all,

After spending probably far too much time play with ideas for a customised RNS-E Splash Screen I finally decided to keep it subtle.

My imagination was running wild and I did start to get a little childish and probably a bit chavy.

This is what it displays when I jump on my A2 now:

7E572348-EF1B-49D4-8B57-7A927991DFE6.jpeg

I have the ability to manipulate images but think I need a better quality software to avoid missing image quality when converting. Has anyone else out there tried anything else.

Kind regards,

Tom
