It's Freezing in here!

The climate control on my 2005 diesel has gone faulty overnight. It worked fine yesterday then today whenever I set the temperature at my usual 20 degrees it blows out chilled air. If I set the control higher.... say 24 degrees then the speed of the fan increases and even more chilled air comes out. When I had a look over it after it had been ticking over for 30 minutes or so the engine was fully up to 90 degrees and running a hand up the heater air intake duct the plenum chamber at the end of the duct seems warm. I have thought about the problem and it seems to me probable that the cabin air temperature sender is faulty but where is that sensor and if it is faulty where can I get one without having to go to Audi?
This is the first climate control problem I have ever had so I really am in the dark with it.

The first step is to use VCDS to scan for fault codes. It is unlikely that the temperature sensor is faulty, much more likely that the temperature flap motor position feedback potentiometer is providing an intermittent signal, making it impossible for the controller to position the temperature control flap, possibly making the motor drive hard into the end stop and making it stick. There is a lot on here about such issues.

I presume that VCDS is an Audi dealer only tool ? or is it possible to buy an aftermarket scanner? My engine fault code reader does not cover the air con.

No, not Audi, but Ross-Tech. There is a free version which will read climate fault codes:
Assuming you have a laptop or desktop you can get close enough to the car, you will need to buy an OBDII-USB interface (about £5 from ebay) and go to the FTDI-chip website to install the virtual com port drivers for your version of windows. Try googling - there is a wealth of information on it. Can be a little tricky to get connected at first as the serial port assignment and settings sometimes need to be tweaked (latency especially).

Or find a member who'll help you out, for free ?
Mac.

You can also try cycling the temperature between Lo and Hi to unstick a stuck flap - swap from one to the other every 15 seconds for a while to see if it helps unstick it. I've seen reports where this has worked but taken anything up to 30mins to get that result. Also worth doing with the air direction controls to keep them freed up.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I have an interlink lead already so will have a look in the loft later today and see if I can find my old windows laptop that I used to use with the interlink lead to scan my Panda. Hopefully I can resurrect it as all the other computors in our house are Macs!. Just a quick question.... is the position pot. part of a new motor assy. or does it have to be ordered seperately?

The pot is integral.
The lead needs to be USB to serial, with matching driver.
Mac.
