VCDS in Devon

@Mka306 Mark, even if you go this route via Tom (and I strongly suggest you consider it), Have a go with scanning the car with my VCDS and see what (other) fault codes come up anyway, even just for your peace of mind.

If it were me I would do a scan and post the results in your project thread as a right of passage / first milestone. You should have it by Friday latest, so a nice weekend job.
I will indeed, I am purchasing the Q cccu and key fobs from @A2Steve at a very reasonable price indeed but the VCDS is something i'd like to try just to at least see what else is going on.

Ok folks so I have the cable and CD being sent to me today by @dj_efk (David) and I downloaded the VCDS Lite software and drivers from the Ross Tech website as it's a free download, thank you to @PlasticMac (Mac) for the help on that, when the cable arrives I will give it a go and update you all on how it goes.
Once again a big thankyou to all the help from the awesome members of this forum, you are all what makes this forum work so well.

Morning David,

Awesome community spirit here in assisting Mark with his VCDS needs. This is the sort of activity that makes this Club great.

Well done indeed.

Mark, you’re in great hands with the information already provided by all involved.

I am really look forward to see where the Mega Project goes as I like to also ‘play’ when I have a spare hour or 2. Fresh eyes and new ideas excite me!

Kind regards,

Tom

Good Afternoon,

I am no IT or VCDS expert but it seems to me downloading VCDS Lite is a backward step and may cause problems. I assume David's VCDS is the full real deal VCDS, so why download the Lite when the full version will arrive shortly? I am just worried with Lite installed it will clash with the full version when you come to install it, unless the full VCDS is clever enough to sort it all out. I think my advice is uninstall the Lite so you have a clean start when you install the real deal.

After you eventually return David's kit, you can uninstall the full for a clean start if you wish to then install the Lite.

The unregistered Lite is quite (intentionally) limited, pay the £75 to register and you will have a good setup.

Andy

Andy I understand what you are saying but I may of neglected to mention that I don't have a CD drive on my laptop so I don't have a way of uploading the full version hence the Lite download.

You download the full version from Ross Tech to your hard drive or a memory stick and install it from there, no need for an optical drive.

That is true but when someone is lending you the disc for free you don't want to have to pay for it, I will see what the free software does and go from there, I've also had an offer from another member to visit him and use his, so I still have options before shelling out money I don't need to.
I'm sure I'll get there in the end.
I do still appreciate all the input thus far, without it I would be paying a lot more to a garage.

I though that you were borrowing the lead from someone that has full VCDS and not just Lite? To to use full fat VCDS you BUY the special cable, the full software is always free. So by using Davids borrowed lead if it is for the full version of VCDS, all you then need to do is download and install the latest full version of VCDS from the Ross Tech web site. Obviously if the lead is only for Lite then you would need to download the Lite version from Ross Tech.

Mark,

I think what Graham meant was you can actually download the full version for free. The part you spend the money on is the Genuine Device/Cable itself. The software is free on the Ross-Tech website:

Below are the links to download direct from the Ross-Tech website:

Link to Lite version.

Kind regards,

Posts crossed in the ether Graham.

I'll be honest I am now completely confused, I don't have a clue what's right or wrong with this VCDS. I will go onto my laptop and see what I've downloaded. This is why I never worked in IT, simply drives me mad, put an engine in front of me and I'll work it out in no time, put a computer in front of me and I become nauseous and faint.

OK just reread all the posts. I now think the lead you are borrowing from David is for VCDS Lite. You may have already done so but will need to download VCDS Lite and drivers from Ross Tech. Even if David has Lite Registered you will only have Lite. For the full version the cable came in three versions, A 3 Vin, a 10 Vin and an unlimited Vin version. Pretty sure if it was a full version lead the owner would be concerned about losing a life (Vin) to use on your car unless they had an unlimited Vin version cable.

The free, Lite version will do full a scan, which is what's wanted as a first step. As far as a scan for errors is concerned, the limitations of Lite is that the fault label is only given for first error, subsequent errors are listed, but by error code only. This is not a problem, as the description of each code is widely available, not least on the Rosstech Wiki.
I don't know the T&Cs for a full version, but check that you can install it on one machine, then install it on another etc.
My registered Lite is limited to one pc, with transfer to a second, at Rosstech's discretion, if the first one dies. To do this, you have to ask Rosstech for an updated file (.vca) that you save to the vcds folder.
So, check first.

This is what I downloaded

With Lite the registered version license is on the computer. With full fat the license is the firmware in the cable.

Mark you have downloaded the latest full version of VCDS. This is fine if the cable is for the full version buy will not work with a non genuine full VCDS cable. My guess is when the cable arrives it will be blue in colour and say KKL in which case you will have to uninstall the full version and then download and install the Lite version.

Ok I'm now understanding what you are saying, I will see what the cable looks like when it arrives unless @dj_efk can enlighten us as to what cable he has sent to me.
Thanks for your patients folks.

It can become frustrating especially if it is a new subject then to have answers coming from all directions confusing you more. Just be patient and hopefully David can confirm to you exactly what he has cable wise. When it arrives you can ask again if you need any more clarification but think I have covered it now.
Tom @2work posted the web page for the software. The version on the left is the one you downloaded. The version on the right is for Lite.
