Obvious point of course, but take the filler cap off before draining the gearbox oil - if you drain it and then find you can't, you'll have a dead gearbox.Hi I would strongly advise draining and replacing the gearbox oil as this often makes a world of difference. Specific type /grade required around two litres when I replaced mine found it had lost about 50 percent of its capacity after 137k miles worked much smoother after initialy I was having difficulty selecting third gear
You can fill the gear box through the selector tower if this happens.Obvious point of course, but take the filler cap off before draining the gearbox oil - if you drain it and then find you can't, you'll have a dead gearbox.
I paid £180 inc VAT from Audi Crewe last year. The new selector tower made the box feel brand new at 118k miles. If it's still bad after adjustment pop off the black plastic cover on the breather tube on the top of the selector tower and pour some gear oil down (or WD40). Work the tower up and down and through the gears to get the oil onto the sleeve bearing and the two big ball bearing guides inside.
If that helps the shift then could be tower bearing. It's built into the selector tower so if gone have to replace whole unit. 10 min DIY job to replace but local Audi parts dept was quoting £150 plus vat for one a couple of years ago.
I believe it should move up and down. See my thread:
02T Gearbox Selector Tower Replacement
In case this helps anyone in the future Adam and I changed the gear selector tower on our new family member today. We've had this car in the family for a month and it was purchased for £500 with 117K miles and a dodgy gear selector. There are many other faults, but we are gradually working...www.a2oc.net

no need to change the entire tower, the bearing is a replacemable item, I've done one
