TDi 75 AMF coolant leak from hoses tandem vacuum/fuel pump seals?

I have little knowledge of engine repairs but to save some cash, I would like to learn to do as many jobs myself as possible. I read today that the leaking tandem part is a known weak spot with the AMF engine, but I’m hoping somebody who has dealt with this issue, could possibly confirm from the attached picture taken at the right side of the engine block (not a great one I know sorry) that the bodged taped up hoses (from the oil cooler?) are indeed the ones I have read about that get damaged from leaking diesel due to seal failure.

If so, I can go through all the previous threads and work out part numbers and maybe even repair guides etc for myself without taking anybody’s time up. I just don’t want to dive in and spend money without being sure first. Would vcds show up any particular fault codes - I don’t have access at the minute but hoping to finish early enough tomorrow to make it to a good local A2 mechanic. Thanks in advance for any help to get me started.

My initial process would be to determine which coolant pipe is leaking and the repair most likely by placing a piece of metal pipe to repair leak.
Then clean engine down of oil and monitor. Cheap and effective (yes I am from Yorkshire)
 
Hose that has failed is part number 8Z0 121 086 D oil cooler hose. Not easy to get hold of by the looks of it.
 
I replaced the oil cooler hoses, heater hoses and one to the expansion tank recently. They were all soft and ballooning due to diesel contamination. I had replaced the LUK tandem pump with a Bosch a wile ago and waited to be sure the Bosch was as reliable as its reputation.

You have two problems, if you source some pipes and fit them they will be quickly ruined unless you have fixed the fuel leak. The pipes are NLA new so you are looking at used or joining in lengths of good rubber.

Ah that explains the sourcing difficulties. I have found a new one but it is around £70 posted from Latvia and I’m a bit reluctant to chance it. If I do find a solution for the pipe would you say replacement of the pipe and the tandem pump is beyond a home mechanic?
A workshop guide would be helpful - is it worth signing up to erWin and paying to get one?

Ouch £200+ for the bosch tandem pump but it has to be done - I take it these cheap seal repair kits are not worth bothering with?

I got my Bosch one from Autodoc a few weeks ago, £143 delivered. Their discounts vary each day and it is cheaper if you order on the app. Postage from Germany included and arrived within about a week, can definitely recommend them. Hope that helps...

No problem, fitted perfectly too, but the Bosch ones do not come with a gasket for some stupid reason. Got mine on Ebay, but Autodoc have them as well if you order at the same time, P/N 038145215. Go for the elring brand as they are OE, about £6

No need to pay for access to the manuals, this website has all you need but it's a bit difficult to navigate.

Yes the pump is a DIY job but don’t rush out and buy one yet. Make sure your existing pump is still leaking. It could have been replaced / repaired and the hoses left to rot further. If it is a Bosch that is a very good sign. The seal kits are a waste of time in my opinion. You will be doing the job again in 6 months. A set of pipes from a breaker is a good value option. At least 3 more will be damaged in addition to the one you have identified.

My AutoDoc gasket gave up after a couple of years. This time I’ve fitted genuine and hope it will last longer.
However they both looked the same so may last the same. The gaskets to avoid are those without patches of blue silicone applied to them. They hold out for a few days only.

Thanks for that, I’ve taken a closer look today and it is a LUK. No obvious leakage around the gasket but something very strange like copper filings underneath the melted hoses…..? Also found around the expansion tank. This (plastic?) pipe directly under the tandem pump looks suspect at one end?

At this rate you will find a Stetson and some spurs. There appears to have been more cowboys working on the car than in a western.:eek:
 
It’s a nightmare, just hoping it’s not too far gone ? A quick search indicates k-seal as most likely culprit. Praying it was just a cowboy attempt to stop the coolant leak from the damaged pipes and not a failing head gasket.

It isn’t but your introduction to DIY is going to be a bit rough.
If the car can be driven you need to completely clean the pump. I would brush brake cleaner and wipe. It will then be dry and clean. Run the engine, ideally drive and if there is anything that feels or smells like diesel, your LUK is leaking.
 
It is drivable, I will pick up some brake cleaner tomorrow and check for any diesel leakage ?
 
I would be taking apart as much of the cooling system and cleaning or replacing as needed including sensors and thermostat and possibly the expansion tank. Curious what colour is the coolant? You have melted hoses therefore you have / had a tandem pump leak. If you can not see it is a new tandem then just replace it with a new one and all the other needed parts. See if you can have a pow wow with the cowboys to see what the "fixed" or more likely covered up or even made worse. Still if the car was cheap welcome to your new project. I would not be driving the car much at all. At least not until I was sure the pipes are not going to explode and what other "repairs" have been made elsewhere.
 
Yep that’s the plan. No driving until coolant system and cambelt/full service at least are done. I had my eyes open going into this one, it was cheap, but I know by the time it is in full running order I wont have saved much, it’s teaching myself maintenance as much as anything. The Sport spec with full DIS, electric lumbar seats (and favourite colour too!) were enough for me to gamble. Job and priority one will be a major coolant system overhaul. Fingers crossed I am up to the challenge!
