6 speed box in a TDI 90?

Afternoon Malay,

If you’re not set on which actual gearbox you want and just want the cheapest available 6 Speed Gearbox for your A2 then this is what’s currently available on the usual auction website (no connection to any of the sellers). This is from a quick search which I guess you’re already doing. The results as you know will change daily/weekly.

MYP £360 with best offer. This probably isn’t too far from me so I could collect and drop it off at WOM next week.

PTU £420 collected from Manchester. Maybe able to haggle on price and see if someone could collect for you?

PTW £350 collected in Manchester. Again haggle on price and see who could collect and bring it to WOM area for you. Edit: the listing has Manchester but if you scroll down it’s in the London area. Maybe worth pursuing if this is your preferred choice.

NTG £550 collect from Oldbury. By far the most expensive and a good hour from me but (at a push) could collect for you and drop off at WOM next week.

I had WOM fit the MYP to the OEM A2 and it delivers brilliantly on my 61 miles (each way) commute. Mainly A46 at 60mph it’s consistently providing 75mpg. 80mpg on the A46 itself but drops when I come off and navigate the local roads to work or home.

Kind regards,

Tom
re the PTW in Manchester / London .. I looked it up, and the reason why the Manchester company has an address in London is that their company is evidently registered through the same online company reg people that mine is (and my business is in Dundee). They are in Manchester - the London address is for HMRC communication only.

this does sound promising. If it is a general scrappy that isn't overly big, and the ad is new, I always immediately look for 'other items' and try to find a bunch of parts from the same car (same model version / colour, year etc. ) that may have other photos and / or a mileage reference to try to cross-correlate - the gearbox specialist places tend to be divorced from the vehicle by the time they're listed if the info isn't cited.

I looked at other boxes on one of the links above and found a Touran 1.6tdi box with a new code to me - JYK for under £300 ; the photos of the casing look similar in profile to the PTW (on the flywheel / engine side) and my removed 5-speed box that I reused in my other Tdi) but I am going to do a bit of reading about the casing part numbers, and the gearing and other internals look like as compared to PTW/MYP etc.

Key thing is that whatever the three-letter code is, you are also needing it to be an 02S part number - that is the subdivision of the MQ250 gearbox family that we are looking for in each case for Tdi substitute gearboxes.

This place (Barlow Street Autos) appears to be a general scrappy judging by reviews, so that’s a positive. Don’t know about size. The PTW ebay link above didn’t have a mileage, whereas other listings from the seller did, so I discounted it for that reason. I don’t think I’m going to take a chance with another code.

I’m a bit thrown about the part number. I didn’t realise there would be “unsuitable“ PTW boxes. How do I find this out? I saw where the 3 letter code is engraved on the long MYP thread, but if there was a reference to part numbers, I missed it.

Don’t worry, all PTW / NTG / PTU or MYP boxes will work

I’d like to put to bed any confusion on this point as I want to avoid an expensive mistake… was @Robin_Cox unwittingly misled by your notes in the very comprehensive post you created last year listing all the candidate boxes…

https://www.a2oc.net/community/inde...ssat-11-onwards-myp-gearbox.25919/post-399327

…where against each donor car you’ve explicitly stated “02S gearbox”, which could imply that there are non-02S gearboxes with these codes which aren’t compatible?

All gearboxes of the codes in question are from the 02S family. This is reflected in the remarks for each of them in that post.

Good luck with securing that gearbox, you really won’t regret it once it’s in, I was just chatting with my brother in law over dinner last night, he absolutely loves the car on the motorway and let slip that he habitually cruises at 80-90mph on the motorway (with a subtle nudge from his girlfriend who was afraid I might not approve), and finds it much more capable and refined at that speed than their top-spec titanium mk7 Fiesta 1.6 TDCi with it’s shorter (5 speed) gearing.

Personally I find that the most noticeable noise at my normal cruise of 65-70mph in sixth is the tyre roar, although in Akoya this is noticeably reduced thanks to the excellent Michelin Primacy 4 tyres I recently put on.

Thanks… I thought that’s what it meant but wasn’t completely sure
sorry, I made that sound un-necessarily confusing and then wasn't online when the above posts went up to be able to clarify what I meant. The ones that work for this swap are all 02S family gearboxes (which are part of the VAG MQ250 super-family as is the 02J 5-speed gearbox family in the Tdi A2s that we are replacing, hence their compatibility). If your search for a 6-speed finds a random gearbox with code (for example) ABC, but looking this up reveals it to be (for arguments' sake) an MQ350 family gearbox or something else, it is wrong and you can eliminate this straight away. Apologies - my contribution above wasn't helpful! More pertinently, for any given three letter name, there is only one model of that gearbox out there - a PTW from a Golf is the same as a PTW from an Octavia and so on as far as I've been able to tell from a 7zap comparison (and I think the same is true for MYPs - there is only one spec for a gearbox with that code that I've been able to find comparing 7zaps).

That’s fine, I really appreciate all the help I can get on this project and we collectively got to the right answer in the end ?

Subject to more photos/info on Monday I think I’ll go for the gearbox I found and suck up the delivery charge if I need to, it’ll still be within budget and that mileage is a big plus. But, if anyone is able to assist with transportation in the next few weeks that would be really appreciated, and I’ll make it worth your while.

Might have missed out on that gearbox, scrappy not contacting me. In the meantime there’s a possible near Wellingborough, however it’s collection only. Just gone onto the Paisley Freight website to try and get a quote and got the message “Due to a backlog at our hub, we have temporarily suspended our pallet service, we hope to resolve this issue next week” ?. Does anyone have recommendation for any other courier, or would a Wellingborough to WOM trip be on anyone’s way in the next few weeks?

Morning Malcy,

Wellingborough is just over an hour and 10 minutes (50 miles) down the M1 from me. I don’t see why I’d not be able to collect for you. Once home, the next leg to WOM is only an hour away (55 miles) traffic dependent of course.

All in just over 200 miles and around 4 hours of my time I guess which is slightly better than where you’re located. As long as the file situation doesn’t get any worse I’d be able to help out.

Let me know your thoughts.

Kind regards,

Tom

What do people think of this one?

This is the one I’ve been enquiring about. I hoped I’d be able to verify the mileage in the listing so asked the seller for the donor car reg, however he says the car’s gone. That, and the lack of warranty make me think I should hold out for something better, even if he accepted a cheeky offer.

You can only do so much - Ask for any proof of purchase of the vehicle with the mileage noted that they can supply. If they can't, then ask them for their business name and address and check them out on google reviews etc. - Provenance of the seller becomes important in the absence of any provenance of the item itself.

If anything doesn't add up or there's some bad reviews then hold off. I see the seller has 100% positive feedback on ebay so that's a good start.

Worth repeating again that these are very strong gearboxes and won't be that old, so even if they've covered more miles than 42k they are unlikely to show any wear-related faults.

The seller hasn’t been very forthcoming so I’m going to pass on this one. Still almost 3 weeks to find one so I think I can afford to be picky, still focusing on getting a PTW though they seem to be a bit thin on the ground compared with the MYP. Maybe if nothing comes up in the next week or so I’ll widen the search to MYPs too.

I’m thinking I might cut my losses and go for this one…

I was a bit uneasy about the mileage not being quoted in the listing, however I contacted the seller who quickly replied with the reg number of the car, which had 60k on the clock at its last MOT a year ago. So not too bad mileage, 30 day return, seller seems to have a very good reputation if eBay feedback and google and Facebook reviews are anything to go by. And he’s accepted an offer of £400 plus delivery so just at the top end of my nominal budget. Just waiting to see if he can send me a close-up photo of the MYP inscription on the box to make completely sure. This one seems a reasonably safe bet.

Yes I hoped to find a PTW box but been really struggling, seem very thin on the ground. I tried my luck with a couple of the parts websites that put you in touch with different breakers but found them very disappointing. They either didn’t respond to my requests or when they did it turned out that the box wasn’t what it claimed to be.

Before I do go for it, I’ve decided to contact the sellers for a couple of the eBay PTW boxes to find more about them, even though I was put off by the mileage not being quoted.

What do you guys think?

Morning Malcolm,

I’ve been using the MYP gearbox on the OEM A2 (75bhp AMF) for sometime now and find it great. I can always achieve average consumption in the high 70s whilst commuting but I do drive frugal. If I’m not at work and using it for local tasks then I still get an average mpg of high 60s.
This is my journey to work the week before last:
D0571E84-8DE6-49E5-8B55-9FD66E6DE554.jpeg

My commute is actually 62 miles each way but reset Trip Data 1 instead of Trip Data 2 at the BP station. Sure it wouldn’t have changed by much at all. Once the engine had warmed along the A46 I was averaging 84mpg but dropped very quickly soon as I started to navigate the local roads to the office.

Ive not owned a TDI 90 so far so wouldn’t know what sort of consumption you could expect. It’s certainly a thumbs up from me (for what it’s worth) for the MYP, if I ever find another one at £250 then I’ll snap it up and get Marcus to fit it to the 250 A2.

Good luck with this purchase.

Kind regards,

Tom

Personally I’d hold out for a PTW due to the previously mentioned gearing differences - plus that MYP is priced ok but isn’t exactly a bargain. Up to you of course however.

Hope you get good luck either way

Sure I’d prefer a PTW for those reasons, but equally I don’t want to leave it until the last minute and then have to pay over the odds for something that might not be satisfactory. The way I see it, an MYP with good provenance would be slightly preferable to a PTW with dubious provenance.

Still struggling to source a decent sounding box and time is starting to get a bit short. Seen one on eBay that comes from a breaker with very good eBay feedback and reviews however mileage is a bit on the higher side at 80k. Listed price is a bit high but could see what he’d offer. Given @dj_efk‘s previous comments I’m guessing this mileage needn’t be a reason to turn it down?

The MYP fitted in Jelly has now covered around 6k, without issues. This was supposedly an 80k gearbox when fitted, although vendors could state whatever they want!
