Today I.....

Steve:
My first time & minimal tools & didnt damage even one clip on the headliner, blinds or OSS not a scratch on the car.
during the 3 hours also helped Roger taking other bits off the car, had 2 coffees/fag breaks, called a friend for advice etc etc
Anyway will time myself next time without breaks etc:)
It’s no competition, I’ve just done it about 25 times at least and I’m not sympathetic to the car. Most people could do the same in the circumstances ?

Today I noticed the front passenger headrest was round the wrong way but I just couldn't pull it out with one hand whilst depressing the latch - must be getting weak in my old age and all this Covid hibernation! So I needed a 3rd hand:

A partly reclined seat help me to pull it whilst sitting in the back.
I have exactly this problem too (as I’m sure did @Erlingtheyounger - although I might not be remembering correctly).

I hadn’t thought of a clamp on the button like that - thanks for the inspiration!

Got a bit carried away!
Top tip while they’re out clean the injectors in brake cleaner around the section with the very very very small perforations as they can be blocked (between the 2 sets of “o”rings.
If you need to remove cam shaft & bearing are worn
dark side developments do the sets.

Keith.

Thanks for that. The head goes to a shop today for a light skim (more a polish) and for the valves and can to be checked. I’m trying to decide whether to take the injectors apart or just clean the tips. I’ll get a new set of seals and copper washers for them though.

Today one of the many banging and bumping noises changed dramatically…had a quick look and don’t think this is good!

Don’t take them apart!
Carefully examine the area I mentioned & lightly brush with an old toothbrush & carb/brake cleaner & you will see the tiny holes ? hundreds of them .
I’ll try & find some photos of it.

Still can’t see them in a2steve photo of a new injector but they are above the hex on the injector body & just below the large red o ring Keith.

I’ve dropped them in to the professionals. For a small fee they’ll test them and if ok clean them and put new seals etc on them.

Today I received a genuine Gendan cable for VCDS lite.
Interestingly, they stated this in the instructions.

Most models after 2003 this cable is no use at all
They are covering themselves with the 2003. It will work for all A2 until the end of the production in 2005

Got my air-con re-gassed today at my local A2 specialist, it had no gas left in and no idea how long it had been left that way. Along with a very dodgy looking condenser, I was hoping for a miracle but to our complete amazement, it worked!! A tiny leak, but all sensors ok and pressure holding. With things going well, I decided to ask him to fit my new air filter, but as the car was going up on the lift, we heard a loud CLUNK! the front coil spring (which is snapped at the top) had popped out and wedged against the upper wheel arch. Despite all efforts, it wouldn’t budge. On the plus side, the air filter housing screws hadn’t rusted due to years of oily diesel baths from the fuel pump leak ?

Reversing out and wincing, waiting for the inevitable grinding and screeching noise, instead I reversed over a pothole, we heard another loud CLUNK! and it popped back in! I can drive ok again ?. New suspension will need to go in next year but not able to do it yet, massive relief.

So finally with new gas and filters I can use my air con - roll on Summer!

Good result re the air con and air filter Froggy but please, for your own safety and that of other road users, replace the broken spring ASAP. There are potential steering concerns as well as being it being an MOT failure.

learned that the cam shaft and bearings are all in beautiful condition even after 210k miles.
but the inlet valve guides are worn to bits and the exhaust valves not far behind.
Had I not just splashed out on a new tandem pump and getting her injectors cleaned this may have been the last straw.

I would just give it a good coating of looking at underneath, you wouldn't want a loose bit of broken spring from emerging from under the car while travelling down the road.

That broken spring can cause all sorts of issues not only to the car itself but other road users. It could jam and cause handling issues, could pierce the tyre and cause a blow out, who knows how the car would handle in an emergency event such as swerving a child crossing the road, parts could fall off and puncture others tyres, or bounce and hit something or someone, the front axle is now imbalanced and braking will be affected.

You are aware the car is no longer in a road worthy condition as does the garage, insurance probably compromised now.

You get the idea. THIS NEEDS TO BE SORTED OUT A.S.A.P. Always replace suspension parts in pairs.
