Drove 200 miles from Devon to Oxted for work - which is the kind of trip I bought the car for originally by the way.

I now know that after applying a 12% correction that CDIS is pretty accurate with the MPG readings; Audrey did it at 69.5mpg which was mostly cruising at 60-70mph depending on the terrain.

Stopped for a break at the 2h mark at Fleet services and parked next to this - the owner (whose sideburns were a thing of wonder, predictably enough) was a bit of a grumpy sod for a classic car owner - but then I assume he’s just filled up and calculated that his car probably isn’t quite as economical 😂

During the journey I saw a total of 3 other A2s, the most I’ve ever spotted in one hit. One of these was on Belgian plates and had two bikes on the back and a roof box on - it looked almost like it was trying to hide!!

Does anyone else wave and flash their lights at another A2 driver? I always do and 90% of the time I get nothing back or slightly odd looks!!!

Well I never, I was born in Oxted, small world!

So today.... my wife was driving one of our A2's and someone pulled out in front of her from a junction. So totally not her fault and the other person admits fault, there insurance company (LV) are even wanting to repair our vehicle as they are admitting liability. I have spoken to our insurance and based on what I told them of the damage there system says our vehicle is repairable (im worried they will get the vehicle and then say its not!). At this point I have 3 options.
1 Get the third parties insurance to repair (then my insurance cant help!), this option im less keen on.
2 use repairer network provided by our insurance (Auxillus)
3 have our insurance (admiral) repair it.

Attached is a photo of the damage (the other vehicle came off far worse, both passenger doors caved in, side curtain air bags deployed), its not clear on the photo but there is now a gap between the bonnet and wing and headlights pushed back. I am really hoping the insurance is right and they can repair it! If they say its beyond economical repair I need to do some research into what is an acceptable value? It has the Open Sky roof (working!) and optional Factory Tow Bar (ive never used it):

That will defo need a slam panel if the headlights have been moved back and I can also see the panel line from front wing to bonnet is way out
I don’t even think this is a available from Audi so near certain that insurance Co will write it off
Bumper and slam panel assuming available would be £800 to £1000 new then labour and paint that is at least a £2K bill

Sorry for the bad news but I’m just being realistic.
Buy it back and repair yourself is a different proposition entirely and very doable for a LOT less

Sad to see this Jason. Like Paul says, buy it back from the insurers, get another slam panel, bumper, headlight, possibly bonnet, wing and the bumper carrier underneath it. It all bolts on. If it has A/C, get a garage with the regassing system to suck out the contents of the system first as you will have to take the condenser off to install on the new slam panel. The coolant radiator likewise has to come off but you're allowed to release the contents of that :)

Even the chassis leg behind there is bolt on isn't it? Mr brooms did a repair like this on his papaya. Good luck what ever you choose to do, as this is rotten luck. I have a bumper but in island light green you could have

Sorry to see mate. I really hope you can find a cost effective way to restore your A2 back to its former glory. Hopefully, there is no hidden damage that can’t be repaired.

It may not be as bad ( if that is possible ) but once you take the headlight out and the bumper off you can see exactly what is damaged. The upper and lower crash beams may have compressed and distorted and this in turn has shifted the wing. But until you look there is a chance that both the slam panel and wing are OK. Removing the crash beams and releasing the slam panel and wing bolts then things may align correctly. Obviously if you find more damage then replace as needed. It is more likely the headlight has sheared off its mounting points than the slam panel be damaged there.

Even the worse case it is very repairable and with used parts. Be careful though as many insurers will not use anything other than new parts so they can guarantee the work carried out. Unfortunately too many of the needed parts are no longer available and as such insurance is highly likely to just write it off. Cat N not too bad but Cat S much more difficult as it is deemed structural damage.

I would certainly remove both headlights and the bumper and have a good look at the damage myself. May even be tempted to not go through the insurance to avoid a write off and still have to hope of getting the car back then repair it.

If they say its beyond economical repair I need to do some research into what is an acceptable value?

That's a real shame. However, in situations like this it is best to arrange your own repair, rather than going through your insurance. You can still claim from the other driver for the reasonable cost of doing the work.

Given where you live, I'd be speaking to Gary at B&F Autos in Hounslow to see if he's happy to take a look. You may well need to source some parts yourself, easily done through this forum.

I'm presuming you prefer not to see the car written off.

Horrible luck

Horrible luck. I had exactly the same bump in my Dolphin Grey car. I managed to source a new slam panel, headlight, bumper and wing within the club for buttons and swapped over on the drive. It’s a massive ball ache but if it’s a car you know and love, it shouldn’t end up costing you to much except your time. We managed to swap the slam panel without dropping the coolant or air con gas btw.
