I have questions!
I wondered how many 1.2 tdi there are in the UK, and on this forum. I've never seen one ever in all my travels.

What colours did they come in?
When was last time one came up for sale?

Fascinating little lefties.

The answer is that something like half a dozen made it over to these shores, maybe as many as 10. As far as I know they were available in all the same colours as the other models from those production years. That said, I'm not sure that also applies to the interior of the 'hardcore' version with the special lightweight front seats and 2-seater rear bench arrangement. I also don't know if you could order them as a Colour Storm. I know of three or four within the sphere of A2OC, @Erlingtheyounger bought his from @RAB last year I believe, Erling's father @Erlingtheelder also has one, as does Rob @chumsofmanutd of WOM Automotive. I believe there's another member in the Gloucester area with one. There was a non-A2OC guy in Cheshire who was selling one last year, I think I remember seeing that he also has another. You won't find them for sale very often, that's for sure :)

He had 2. A blue one from Holland which owed him 3k and I only had 2k. (He later sold it for 2k) Also a red one which he was keeping as far as I’m aware. They both had well over 200k on and possibly been stood for a while in a field. Would probably have cost the same again in servicing and preventative maintenance/repairs (gearboxes are tricky on the 1.2tdi and need expert maintenance) I would still love an 80mpg auto A2 though!

I believe @ecoangel has one and there is a Dr in Shrewsbury who sourced one via Wom who I believe maintains it for him. I’d be very surprised if there are more than 10 in the Uk. They’re good fun 😊

I know WOM have had 3 through their books that I know of - 1 Island Green which they may still have - I saw it last September whilst there 1 Akoya Silver that I was offered and should have bought in hindsight !! - that maybe the one refered to owned locally to them - the last one was a 2005 import from Germany that was bought back them from by VW UK which released my 2005 1.4 TDI Sport in Mauritius Blue that had been on the VW heritage fleet for many years !!! I bought that late 2016 and still have it with me here in France !!

Hi all!
I thought I’d make this my first post as it seems serendipitously pertinent.
I’ve, as of 2 weeks ago, taken on a Tornado red 3L which isn’t without issue/s..., so I’ve seen this forum is not half bad for info and expertise on the model.
So I bought off a lovely couple near Canterbury and I’m also kent based so had to take the plunge.
Would anybody here know of the legend that is ‘L3 LUP’??
Best regards.....👍🏼

I don't know about the Akoya one, but WOM do still have the Island Green one. Rob brought it to the Stanford Hall social in May this year. I've also previously seen it on site at WOM.

It's Flash Red, not Tornado Red.
Before everyone gets too excited about another LHD A2 in the country, perhaps we should make clear that this 3L is in fact a VW Lupo, the very same one owned originally by @RAB, and more recently by @gangitano85. @RAB is still the best resource of knowledge of the 1.2TDI in both the A2 and the Lupo.
The Lupo and A2 1.2Tdis have a lot in common, same engine (ANY although Lupos from 2001 had AYZ which was identical apart from electronically-controlled EGR) and essentially the same gearbox (two different models with different internals but same ratios), same hydraulic units (although the mounting of the pump units was different). However, drive shaft lengths are different (by about 10mm) and front suspension is different, although both are alloy. The front suspension of the Lupo is way, way better than the A2, for reasons unknown. The Lupo is also much, much quieter, probably due to the steel body shell - you'd hardly know it's a diesel. 80% of the parts of a Lupo 3L are different to those of a "standard" Lupo, not including GTI and FSI Lupos which use the same body shell as the 3L.

Hi Proghound (good name!) Nice to know I'm keeping things in the very small family✊ Shout out to @gangitano85 and @RAB .

It is very red!
Strangely never a colour I've been drawn to before, however, the more I see 'Lola' (unless she/he already has another name) the more I'm really chuffed of the red.

Hi @RAB 👋. I'm very impressed on the general condition of the Lupo despite such high KM. Would you be the original importer that had lots of the servicing done around Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne way?

I was and did! However, in 2007 when I bought the A2, I also bought VCDS and could quickly see that a transmission basic setting had never been done! I decided that I would either have to sell both or do the maintenance myself. If you ever need work on the transmission, I can thoroughly recommend VW Caffyns at Eastbourne.

Ah, awesome! Good to hear about VCDS use as I'm weighing up buying a unit..., but I'm such a newb to motor mechanics. I've a mobile chap over tomorrow looking into my 'smoking issue'..... Wish us luck😅

Welcome to the community LeatherTan, although it seems that we have already met before :)
Hey gangitano! I trust you're both well, I'm really looking forward to progressing with the 3L and glad to be an owner, or custodian, of such an innovative cult car.

Ps, RAB....
Thanks for the Caffyns recommendation. Would they be a possible port of call regarding wider care of the model? I did call them up to sound-out their stance and they quoted having record of a few things being done but the service person didn’t sound especially understand/enthusiastic, though I’d understand their personal knowledge being limited.
PPs... is their anything glaring to check re. an undiagnosed smoking/fueley-diesel-y problem on this model? She is starting ok, and ticking over fine and quiet but the problem comes on virtually from firing up. I’m a super-novice with car maintenance and super-duper novice on diesels so have run forum checks and also on Club Lupo, and seems like it may be anything from temp. sender to totally shagged engine.
Is it a case of bringing up fault codes (the aforementioned VCDS) and going through a check list one-by-one? Hyper ambiguous, I appreciate🤓
