Today I.....

Drain plug was not a problem, hopefully also input plug :).
I was surprised in how good “look” the gearbox oil was. I expected to be completelly black. Though my car has only 109.000 km. Still, the difference is obvious.
1.1l was drained out.

Ooh, thanks for sharing. I’m no chemist but I think on balance 20 year old oil is probably worth changing out. It’s interesting that only 1.1 ltrs came out, as I thought the AUA gearbox needs 1.9 ltr. It doesn’t look like it has taken on water to a significant degree which is good

Today I've began looking into changing the timing belt and water pump, but the Gates kit is over £130 and the Bosch is £160+.
Does anyone know if is there a tad cheaper deal? Thanks

Today had to refuel and at last - after 4 years - getting a decent fuel consumption:

View attachment 97071

62.4 mpg / 4.6 L/100km over 617 miles / 45 litres. It's a remapped 1.4 75 TDi with longer 5th gear.

Over the pandemic the A2 was hardly used and then only for short journeys. Consumption is measured red line buzzer to red line buzzer. Using eyeball estimate I reckon on one long journey at c60 mph I was getting over 70mpg, but it was 16 years ago I last had 70mpg between fills.

The fuel over recent years has been mainly Texeco Supreme. Expensive, but better on the engine when doing mostly shorter journey.
Misprint I assume, petrol in a TDI wont give you many miles?

Today I swapped my new flap for an old flap, and midway had a cat flap…..

Correct. This is my first diesel and I still say "I need to get more petrol". The spreadsheet is a hangover from my previous petrol car.

I've only mis-fueled once and then I bought one of those alarms that when you open the fuel flap shouts out to only fill with diesel. Everyone on the forecourt looks round :)

Today my A2 passed Slovenian MOT with flying colours. Aftet 8 years of not being on the road, it will finally be able to do some miles :)
I am quite excited…
Your video clips have been very helpful to me as a new owner and I'm delighted you have your car back on the road. Now you can really enjoy it.

Contitech are another OEM maker. Their kit is slightly cheaper, but you'd need to check that it ships free of import duty:

More up on the Diesels but have you searched the skf and dayco options?
Yes I've had a look to no avil, dayco says not available at the moment. I'd get prefer Gates or Bosch to be fair, but can't find cheaper deal on them. Thanks for looking anyway.

I was thinking about eBay ones as well, but most are from abroad and rather get it from UK in case of extra changes, and easier to sort if there's an issue with the items as well. Thanks for looking anyway.

I had a friend (who handily, has just taken over a garage in Chard, west Somerset) take a look at my brakes while the car was in for the aircon work - he sent me these pictures with the comment that the rear axle in general looks like it’s been parked in the sea! He advised me to get new carriers and bolts in readiness for the next time the discs need changing as the ones there are at severe risk of rounding off and needing cutting.

The missing friction material from the pad has been MIA for a long time apparently.
I always felt the brakes seemed a little lame and lacked sharpness in their bite for a given amount of pedal - and they felt slightly spongey - despite the fluid change when I bought the car. I guess this explains all of those symptoms at least to a degree. Front brake inspection next….

I thought this car was in top top mechanical condition until I saw these pics!!!

The rear discs and pads appear to need changing every 3 to 4 years depending on use and conditions David. I can't recall having any brake work done so they've done well to last this long. I think my 90 had new calipers all round last year.
