How many 1.2 tdi's in uk?

Caffyns did have one technician who was the only person allowed to work on my 1.2Tdis; whether he's still there or not, I don't know.

As for L3 LUP, the first thing to do is a compression test. If that's OK, I would remove the injectors and get them checked. A company I have used before is Kent Injection Ltd in Detling. From previous experience with my A2, while you are at it, change the camshaft bearing shells - you will find that they are down to the copper.

Thanks a lot, RAB🙌🏼 These are all solid leads I can get looked into.
I did have a mobile mechanic over who pulled up a few fault codes and had a bit of a delve. I can’t recall the exact details but he’s formulating a plan-of attack to get back to smooth running..., which did naturally include injector considerations. He did find one ‘fault’ running on cylinder 2 which then swapped to cylinder 3 so he surmised is unlikely to be mechanical if it doesn’t stay constant... Then, an odd issue where, jiggling the jumble of loom cables that curl down, from below the tandem pump and then disappears, to the passenger side (lhd) under the oil filter, would cut out the engine virtually instantaneously, or almost die, like a hiccup, with only a slight wiggle of those cables, but....., not every time😣 Not ideal on the pothole riddled kent country roads. The smoking issue was ever present when on tick over and large revs would generate a lot more, but, being the diesel virgin I am, I’ve learned that time spent standing and unused (I’m talking months, here) can give any diesel very bad smoky/billowy issues where fuel gets ‘left in the system’. Maybe a good run will sort her out....?

Hey... updating the post to keep it alive & relevant as time passes... very relevant but only to a very few it would seem. As of Oct 2022 there are 12 Audi a2 1.2 tdi in the UK. 11 on the road and 1 sorn.

Interesting site...
ttps://www.carlogbook.co.uk/audi/a2/

There are 33,322,187 cars & other vehicles with valid MOTs.

There are 7,578 AUDI A2 left in the UK with an MOT. 0.0227% of all UK vehicles are AUDI A2. Vehicle data is updated in near real-time as they pass & fail MOT tests.

Only 5 identied a2 1.2 tdis with valid mots? What are the other 6 doing on the road 🤔

Suspect you’ve happened upon a compromised data source given the number of A2’s with 2 + litre engines listed

Those with long memories will recall back in 2005 I actually got the DVLA to send me a file off all A2s (no personal data I hasen to add). There were quite a lot of weird engine sizes and other bits of data. I presumed that at that time DVLA data was based on paper returns from dealers who were, shall we say, sloppy. I would hope today it is all electronic and linked to data from the manufacturer.

A2 Stats

Just to update the status of L3 LUP, Leather Tan (or his mechanic) discovered that the connection to the injector loom, despite being covered with flexible conduit, had been rubbing against something which had removed all the insulation down to the copper! This was the cause of the smoke. He has since MOT'ed the car and is now using it.

Last year, there was a bit of an eccentric guy selling a good number of A2’s that he had collected over the years. 2 of them were 1.2 TDi’s that he had imported to the U.K.

I’m not 100% sure either of them at had actually been converted and officially imported Steve. That’s based on a conversation I had with Rob @ WOM who had tried to deal with the guy and given up.

Updates with a few more added at the top..

Hi guys. Yes mine is one of the few in the UK. It's recently turned 260k miles. It has a few small mods including factory towbar, front isofix brackets and full black leather sports seats interior.

I bought it with 156k on it, non running and fixed it after it had been off the road for over 2 years. The dealers/specialists etc couldn't sort it. It was the gearbox control system that was refusing to allow the engine to start. After replacing every physical component and having no luck, I took my gearbox ecu with me and met up with Ecoangel (I was driving my bright yellow Lupo 3L at the time) and he very kindly allowed me to plug it into his car. His car instantly became as unresponsive as mine so I knew that the ecu was the issue.

A few months after getting it running, the gearbox died (3/4 selector fork snapped as they do in 3Ls) so rebuilt the gearbox as I had done previously in my Lupo 3L.

They're a great car. The best economy I've seen on my car (indicated) has been 107.9mpg. It regularly does over 100mpg (summer tyres, motorway use) and around 75-80mpg on the daily run.

I actually had you down already! Great to e meet you and to know your name as well as your handle. Even better again to have you more experience to pull on in the quest of keeping the 3Ls running.

Such a shame the 1.2 tdi wasnt the mainstream engine of choice for the a2 as its figures are truly astounding and complete the original a2 design goal.

Possibly final report…. 11 out of 12, not bad! 😁

Saw very similar in EUrope based on sales/adverts of 1.2s too.

Having exhausted (no pun) the issue of 1.2s in the UK... 12. I thought I'd turn my stats hand to what's everywhere else ie. In the world.

Estimate is 2,514 at the moment.

This is set to fall to around 1000 by 2035 (year of ICE new car ban in EU). For those who like trivia; in 2031 there will be around 1500, against 1.5 billion cars in the world... making it truly '1 in a million' 😀
