Today I.....

Yep it will be good to see(!) just how much better than existing upgrades halogens they are, both in terms of performance and also longevity- anything over a year would be satisfactory; anything more than 2 would be good!

MOT day today. Passed with flying colors, no advisories, despite the car having been parked for months. Always a welcome bonus when the MOT inspector throws in few compliments like "It looks brand new!" :)

Tonight I realised why I was having so much trouble seeing my way home in the dark & rain ... the adjuster on my headlamp switch was set to 2. Must have been tested at my recent MOT and I'd not noticed they'd left it like that. Set it back to 0 and I'm picking up medium-distant reflectors properly again ?

Still glad I now have a pair of +200% bulbs on order though, the output has always been somewhat yellowy and doesn't hold its own very well against oncoming modern armour-piercing LEDs.
Hi I followed a guy on the A17 last night
with exactly the same thing, he turned off into our village & stopped outside the local shop so I asked if he was ok as I’d noticed him having problems on the main road, turned out it was his wife’s car & he couldn’t see so I suggested he check the level control on the lights, they were all the way down on no:3, I convinced him to turn up to 0 where full illumination resumed.
I left him to carry on his journey safely.

Presumably his wife had been happily driving around for some time unable to see properly when it got dark!

The car is a testament to your good self.

Aside from the fantastic looking A2, I really like the car scissor lift which will recess into its space in the ground very neatly. I’d like one of them in my garage!

Today, driving along in my lovely new 1.6, I saw two other A2's.
I flashed them to say hello.
No reaction.
Glum b****rs.
I assume you were close to home, they are probably all deep in thought about what to drink at the pub tomorrow whilst we have to continue drinking at home?

Today I was naughty...
The only way to go... no horrible rustiness with the stainless full system! ?
An absolute pleasure taking it to the guys at Longlife Caerphilly, whole system including stainless down pipe for a meagre £550... ?
Plus £28 for the stainless flange from darkside developments.
Nothing noisy but does have a nicer tone to it and the pick up is definitely noticeable! Should get better MPG’s now too. So, result all round

Yes, it does look brand new. :) I've had similar "looks new" comments for mine after I've given it the annual deep clean but I don't think mine looks as good as yours. In particular my black skirts are showing their age from all the crud thrown up from the road. I'm thinking of having them resprayed next year. Have yours been done or are they original condition?

Side skirts are relatively new - and dirty for my standards - Why they are new is actually quite sad....it starts when the garage lifted the car not using the proper points. Classic.

I've just got back from dropping my Touran off at the garage for a cambelt change and thanks to their choice of courtesy car, today I got to sample the "other end" of the small VAG range in the early 2000's - a Skoda Fabia 1.2 petrol estate in classic (bog standard / lowest level) trim.

Driving it along the M5 / A30 back to Honiton from Exeter, it left me feeling distinctly unimpressed: Yes it's roomy, but then it isn't actually a small car in estate format, being 4.2m long (the same length as our Touran, a vastly more spacious car and also a whole 40 cm longer than the A2!). It didn't really have the same quality feel as the Golf of a similar vintage I had as courtesy car last time -which incidentally had done twice the mileage but still felt as tight as new. The Fabia was also incredibly noisy: Even allowing for being spoilt by the luxuriously silent Touran, the road roar in particular was simply deafening and I gave up trying to listen to the radio very quickly at 70 mph. I really hope Merlin proves to be the opposite end of the refinement spectrum compared to this thing as otherwise we are not going to get along! Luckily I've never seen a post from any of you saying the A2 is particularly noisy at speed; so with the six speed conversion so it should be pretty good I hope, even by modern standards.

That said, I noticed the Fabia had Audi alloys with (almost worn out mid-range rear, half-worn Chinese front) 205/45/16 tyres on, too wide and low-profile in my opinion and also Skoda's, who specified 165/70/14 or 185/55/15 depending on whether it came with steelies or alloys. This will have undoubtedly added to the roar, they also look to have aged badly as they are perishing in the sidewalls.

Coupled with a quick glance at its MOT history and perhaps I'm being too harsh in judging the marque based on this example - In fact perhaps I should seek an alternative garage!

Am I expecting too much from a VAG specialist independent garage, or is it fair to think that if their courtesy car standards are this low then what else do they scrimp on? Their workshop is always spotless and the work they've done for me so far has been good, also I'm sure the vast majority of their customers wouldn't care or even think to look this stuff up!! But let's just say that with the tyres in particular being in the state that they are, I won't be encouraging my wife to use this car while the Touran is away.

Take a look and let me know your thoughts people:
