Two things. If you concentrate on the job in hand i.e. driving, there should never be a reason for 'emergency braking' and, if you followed the advice given in the Highway Code, you'd always leave the car in the appropriate gear when parking, especially on a gradient.

I had a 'Pass with Defects' last month on my Land Rover Freelander 1. The defect was 'split rear wiper blade'. The rubber was split for around an inch at the top end. The OEM replacement doesn't have a split but neither does it have the correct curvature to effectively clear the window as well...

It's worth trying having one or both of the rear windows open. That seems to reduce the helicopter/drumming effect and might help to direct the smoke out of the car.
