    Open Sky - Disaster Strikes

Thanks, I’ll have to wait until next week to have a look. Don’t much want to take the roof off again…

    Open Sky - Disaster Strikes

My Open Sky is a unit previously refurbished by A2 Cars, and has worked without issue for the last five or six years - cleaned and re-greased once a year, and always opened regularly whenever the car’s being used. Yesterday I opened the roof to the first position and there was a loud clunk; I...

    Blue Colourstorm Milnthorpe Traffic Lights

There was a very tidy blue Colour Storm at Classics over Sands in Grange last year.

How to remove the oil filter on 1.6 FSI ?

Standard screw-on, it’s a bit of a pain to get to.

    Rear Caliper Banjo Washers

Back ones, think I’ll buy both to cover all bases.

    Rear Caliper Banjo Washers

Have a small fluid weep - can anyone confirm they are the usual M10 size?

    Rear ABS Sensor - Coincedence?

That makes sense - I meant does the purple locking bit sit above the orange seal (which it should as per the photo).

    Rear ABS Sensor - Coincedence?

@rotifer Useful. Should the purple collar be visible inside the connector, or does the orange seal cover it?

    Rear ABS Sensor - Coincedence?

Yes - I know how the VW connectors work, and no issues with pin alignment - just a resistance to either new or old sensor sliding far enough into the female connector to click under the tab. Not sure if the internal purple plastic ring should be visible or not, can only assume the original...

    Rear ABS Sensor - Coincedence?

I haven’t changed one before, but after (easily) disconnecting the original sensor, neither that or the new one would then click home into the connector. There’s a squashy orange seal with a purple plastic ring around the internal female connector - not sure if the purple plastic piece should be...

    Rear ABS Sensor - Coincedence?

Fitted a new ABS sensor, problem solved. Everything came apart very easily, but getting the sensor to click into the connector was a nightmare - think the old sensor may have been stuck to the seal and dislodged it.

    Rear ABS Sensor - Coincedence?

Thanks, car’s very clean underneath, so hopefully it doesn’t put up too much of a fight.

    Stuck Rear Caliper Piston

Yes, got it wound back in fine (and out, and in, a few more times just to make sure) - boot is fine, caliper cleaned up pretty well.

    Rear ABS Sensor - Coincedence?

OK - VCDS says “Mechanical Failure - Intermittent”. Will try to get it out and give it a clean, there’s quite a lot of ground metal dust from the disc under there.

    Rear ABS Sensor - Coincedence?

Haven’t checked with VCDS - from memory that distinguishes between mechanical and electrical faults.

    Rear ABS Sensor - Coincedence?

As per my other thread, I had an inside rear brake pad split from its backing plate. Before I had looked to see what had happened, the ABS exclamation mark made an appearance, and is still doing so after replacing the pads and disc. It resets with the engine off and appears again above about...

    Stuck Rear Caliper Piston

Had a look today - with the caliper off, and after a lot of toing and froing with a caliper piston cube, it goes in and out very easily. Can only assume that the reset tool’s thread pitch meant that it was putting too much pressure on before the piston thread engaged. Put half a litre of fluid...

    Stuck Rear Caliper Piston

Boot is fine, nothing looks untoward. I’ll whip it off next week and report back.

    Stuck Rear Caliper Piston

Not with the car at the moment. Agreed that one fully worn pad is the same as two half-worn pads in terms of travel - the piston is just proud of the extended boot. The piston appears to be working (ie pressing the brake pedal presses the pads against the disc, and it isn’t binding when the...

    Stuck Rear Caliper Piston

Definitely not the handbrake, the pads aren’t being pressed against the disc with it off and everything rotates freely.
