Finding and preparing a new to me AMF

Does the 3 cylinder head have a reputation for warping? From a quick search on google, I'm not finding much. This is an excellent thread btw Phil. Very informative and an invaluable reference 👍

    AMF Rocker cover replacement options

Unfortunately not. I'm very light on connections to trade. I'll give the Audi dealer a try and see what price they come up with, but it'll be a 40+ mile round trip to collect it even if I go to my nearest dealership. The alternative is to order from Skoda-parts.com or LLLParts, who've got it...

    AMF Rocker cover replacement options

I've just called my local TPS (Swindon) to try to order one of these. I was immediately deflected to my Audi dealer. The guy that answered was very firm on the 'trade only' stance. It seems that TPS are a bit of a lottery if you're trying to buy from them as a member of the public.

    AMF tdi MAP Sensor interchangable?

I bought some hex-head stainless self tappers to fit mine as the heads chew up on the OEM screws and as you say, they rust. The hex head makes them easier to fit, too. Size is 4.8 x 22, which is very close to the size given for N90172004. I bought mine on ebay, listing number 223524452542. I...

Finding and preparing a new to me AMF

That head cleaning looks great, Phil. For some reason, I’d not thought of using a domestic steam cleaner, which is daft as I’ve got one here with a perfect attachment for that kind of work! Thanks for the prompt. I’ve got to do very similar work on mine in the next few weeks.

Gearbox's compatible with the ATL engine

Paul @depronman is a strong proponent of the JDD and has told me he can’t understand what I don’t like about it. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. My AMF is remapped. Personally, I wouldn’t even think about fitting a JDD without it. There’s a big jump from 2nd to 3rd and it’s very...

Maximum thickness for spacers, 16 inch SE wheels?

15mm is as thin as you can go if you want spacers with the hubcentric spigot in unit with the spacer itself. For 10mm spacers, you have to fit a separate knock-in extender for the spigot.

Gearbox's compatible with the ATL engine

Pleased to be of some assistance. Be warned that splitting the MYP 'box is an utter pig. My EWQ came apart like a dream - one puller, nothing jammed, very little wear. But it's come from a two-owner (I'm the second one) car that's been very well looked after for its entire life. The MYP on the...

Gearbox's compatible with the ATL engine

I'm following this with interest as I have a now-rebuilt MYP with the bellhousing half of the casing taken from my original EWQ 'box and put on in place of the MYP part to give me the all-important speedo drive output. I've also replaced the diff bearings and all seals. At the moment I don't...

Maximum thickness for spacers, 16 inch SE wheels?

I'm surprised this question hasn't been asked before, but I can't find any previous thread that does so: For the standard 16" SE 6 spoke alloys with the recommended tyre size fitted, standard bodywork and standard suspension, what is the maximum thickness of spacer that can be fitted without...

A2 Rear Axle restoration – my journey

It's a while since I did it but I don't remember it being a problem. Use 3 to 1 heat shrink. I had to stop the heat shrink short of the nuts so that they could be backed off when fitting the pipes. I then gave the exposed bit of pipe a covering of axle grease to keep the weather out. For the...

A2 Rear Axle restoration – my journey

For (3.), those clips are wound on to self-tapper type threaded studs that are welded to the axle beam. The plastic clips just twist off (unscrew). However, you'll probably find that the plastic is now so brittle that when you come to refit the brake pipes into the clip parts, the outer wings...

Information Batch Two of the Arm Rest brackets / plastics for the Audi A6(c5) armrest to fit the A2

Hi Paul - If you've got any of the steel brackets (Item 1) still available, can I put my name down for one please? Just the bracket. I'd also like to have one of your modified EGR's so it may be best to PM me and I'll sort out payment. Thanks, Matt

1.4 AMF oil pump chain and Tensioner

Do you know if the sump baffle is still available from VAG and if so, any idea of the part number?

    Today I.....

Interest piqued, I had a rummage through the offerings on ebay. I was looking for a good visual match to that dull green moulding with lots of glass fill evident, a crisp brass pressing (not polished) with engraving on the rim (but not the VAG part number or name) and Luxembourg as the country...

20Nm + 90 degrees, Renew = Torque to yield bolt?

I'm following your calculations with interest. My only comment would be: might it not be more benficial to calculate (or better still measure, empirically) the tension in (or pressure applied to mating faces by) the bolts, rather than focussing on the torque values? Once you've stopped turning...

Bigger engine into an AUA A2

Has anyone ever fitted that engine to an A2? That's the conversion I've been pondering for my SORN'd petrol A2 for some time. Mechanically it looks like it would be pretty striaghtforward, using a Polo 1.0 TSi subframe. It's the ECU swap and other electronics that gives me the jitters. It would...

Flat Battery after long break in use

My Ctek charger (it's a boggo MXS 5.0, I think) doesn't like a completely flat battery. It either just sits there and does nothing (as though there's no battery connected to it) or it flags a battery fault but offers no magic fix. Either way, it doesn't bring a flat one back from the dead...

    Of brakes and men.

Very nice work Robin. Would you care to comment on the Bilstein B6's and what they do for ride and handling, or is it too early to tell? The Stark stub axles you linked to aren't the same as those for the S1 (8X)? I'm not aware of anyone making aftermarket versions of the S1 hubs with the...
