    Project DIY Pine Green

There is a manual tailgate release accessed from inside the car. The wiper judder may be more than just the blades. The arm joints wear and it is important to check them. As the arm gets closer to the screen it will crack the screen. The arms are NLA but a member offers a refurbishment service...

    Let’s talk about galvanic corrosion.

The corroded fasteners on the stainless exhaust hanger in the picture above were low milage Dacromet coated mild steel, probably grade 10.9 as used extensively in the factory on an A2. I have replaced them with A2 stainless which is less corrosion resistant than A4 stainless. I couldn't get A4...

    Let’s talk about galvanic corrosion.

Here is something I’ve been using to help understand what I’m seeing: It is a galvanic series chart giving the voltage difference between two different metals positioned together both in contact with a common electrolyte. In this situation galvanic corrosion can be expected but only if the...

    Let’s talk about galvanic corrosion.

Not been online much recently and there has been zero progress with the A2. I've continued to make observations and take pictures re galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion is caused by a flow of electricity between two dissimilar metals, anything that increases that flow is bad? Apparently...

    Weird noise then shaking

I blew one of these up on the first attempt to use it. Had a small puddle of oil and no movement of the drive shaft. Got the shaft off using a mechanical hub puller and two long breakers. One to hold it and one to turn the screw. After one use the puller was a mess so I had to buy a...

    Today I.....

@kp 115 thanks for the tip. I’ve had that cable fail on a Golf. Cranked very slowly. I’ll check it out on the A2. The replacement cable is part of the brush assembly I believe?

I have the same theory, present a clean car and the tester starts the job expecting the car to pass. Pre MOT scrub was my job for today but it looks like i’m rained off

    Today I.....

I have a newish Audi cable, just a couple of years old. Shouldn’t have fatigued so quickly. Could be a crud problem as I wasn’t familiar with aluminium oxide then. Car is starting fine with its replacement battery so I will check it all out when I change the engine.

    Pinch bolts

But why do you need a bolt? Did you shear the old one and have to impact it out?

Bolts for Front Brake dust cover/shields/plates

I’ve found examples recently of stainless rotting mild steel so I use the washer for the stainless to attack before the splash guard. An extra coat of paint or fitting with a dielectric grease or other corrosion inhibitor would slow things down in the absence of a washer. I need to finish my...

Bolts for Front Brake dust cover/shields/plates

If your replacement guards are steel the best option I have found is stainless screws with zinc plated mild steel washers. If your replacement guards are aluminium mild steel zinc plated screws with an aluminium washer appear to be a good option.

Finally got little Dog to go to the shops. He’s been on shopping strike for about two weeks. Battery fully charged, everything works, turn the key, nothing. I thought: Immobiliser fault Engine earth Starter failure Ignition circuit failure etc No it was the battery, charged to 12.5v...

    Very stuck T45 Torx bolt...

What material is the bolt? If it is aluminium my advice can be disregarded.

A scare today followed timing belt change and oil drain!!

More thoughts on the subject, things i can check. When the oil filter is removed does the oil pump also drain? Can the filter canister be pre filled with fresh oil after a filter change? Can the oil pick up become restricted? It’s fine in my case but can an engine create a beever dam of...

A scare today followed timing belt change and oil drain!!

For first start of a petrol engine after extensive work on it or after a very long stand I start it like this. Drain some oil, pour it back in the top. Remove plugs and oil filter Earth plugs or disable ignition Disable fuel supply Crank to prime oil pump, can be messy but leave it Fit pre...

    1.4 Tdi Struggling to start..

Not been around recently; £300 is a lot of money and wondered how you arrived at the pump being the problem. I've read the thread from start to finish and the test you did with the diesel feed direct into the pump so eliminating the filter and tank is a test I would have done. You still have...

    Very stuck T45 Torx bolt...

Its not a stud extractor is is a bolt extractor that you need. You drill down the middle, if you can get a drill in, then a reverse tapper insert extracts the screw. If it snaps you have to weld. Edit as @L162LZ posted while I was posting.

    Very stuck T45 Torx bolt...

If that is a steel screw welding a nut on is the best way to go.

Disconnect cowl panel grille / fresh air duct without removing wiper and washer jets. it’s vital to remove fresh air duct to get access to back side

AMF EGR removal? I’ve never had any problems but there is a lifting eye on the back of the cylinder head; or rather there was in my case. Remove it; I suspect it not being there is the reason I have better tool access and no problems.
