1.4 Petrol cambelt change

Hi Spike, for point 6 in your cam belt procedure, can you advise where the 16mm bolt is to loosen the tension on the aux belt? I'm trying to get the alternator out and can't seem to locate it. Thanks Frank

Hi frankie

It's not my write-up but on the alternator belt tensioner arm there is a cast hexagon, roughly on the centre of the pulley. Access is very tight but try and get a ring key or socket on the hex to wind the arm back against the spring. Thought the hex was smaller than 16mm on my 2001 TDi but maybe they have changed it on later cars.

Cheers Spike

Fantastic - thanks Spike. Now I've got the belt off, I just need to work out how to remove the alternator from its mount. All the bolts are off but it's not budging. Any ideas?

The alternator is held in place by slip bushes in the alternator body lugs. These are squeezed against the mounting brackets by the clamping bolts. Sometimes just 'working' and rocking the alternator side to side releases the bushes. A spray with WD40 also helps.

Thanks again Spike. 'A lot of working and rocking' worked in the end. I've replaced the alternator and am seeing a healthy 14.3 volts across the battery with the engine running but am still seeing the battery light on the dashboard dimly and constantly illuminating. All connections are tight and there is no play in the alternator belt. Is there anything else I should be checking?
