1.4 petrol MPG

Hi everybody,

I just read the TDI fuel-consumption discussion. I'm interested in your Petrol MPG.
My A2 is from 6/2000 (One of the very first ones, I guess) and I own it since April 2001. I did about 10000 miles (most of it in the city) and my overall MPG is 42. The worst MPG was 38, the best one 47 (Autobahn [8D], not over 85 mph).

Ive had 50 mpg in my petrol A2 , average speed 60-70mph

2002, 1.4, azure blue, 2 tone leather, concert II single cd. Member of A2OC site.

On our trip to Scotland last year we saw returns of about 55mpg at a steady 70mph. During day to day running, consisting of short, stop & start journeys, we get about 35mpg.

1.4SE petrol in Merlot Red, Biege interior, 16" 5 spoke alloys, DIS, Open Sky, Elec rear windows.

What is the "best" cruising speed for the motorway?

I estimate itss around 60-65 mph. the engine makes a "labouring" noise when you go over that. it still goes well though.

Low mileage A2's of mine were on about 35mpg around town.

Steve - 2002 1.4SE petrol, Silver, black/black interior, Then an identical replacement 2003 A2. Now a Toyota Corolla 1.6 T-Spirit

Currently averaging about 40 MPG with fast motorway 70 - 80 and around town use. Worst about 35 MPG and a best of 45 MPG.

Interested to hear people's experiences with the 1.4 petrol. I have the base spec 1.6 FSi and it's the first car I've had that looks as though it will better my previous MPG figures on cars of this size.
These were:-
1979 Alfasud 1350cc 79 bhp 870kg 134,000 miles 39mpg overall.
1998 Fiat Brava 1370cc 80 bhp 1040kg 45,000 miles 40mpg overall.
1.6FSi 1598cc 110 bhp 995kg 2,300 miles 46mpg overall, to date.

This is based on all fuel put in the tank, and so represents the actual average (odometers have been pretty well correct). The duty cycle has been pretty much the same over the 24 years. I have been using Optimax in the A2, which may reduce fuel consumption slightly, compared with previous fuels.

Hi all,

Mine is doing about 41 MPG overall (14,5 km/l). I mostly drive around town and so far I've driven about 6k miles (10k km) with her.
On motorways with average speed 80, she drinks about 45 MPG (16km/l).

36mpg in the A2 1.4 petrol, not too favourable when my A4 1.8 does 32mpg!
