Dear All

Hope everyone is keeping well.

I recently got quote for a thermostat from our sponsor. Nearly fell off my chair on the cost for the thermostat £97!!! Hope that’s nothing to do with Brexit or energy price. Lol
Any suggestions on alternatives guys?

Thanks as always

£97 is about the price of a FSI thermostat, suspect the wrong model quoted. Aftermarket under £10.

Something to be said for using genuine Audi, ask again.

Recommend you check the price of the correct Audi part, as some aftermarket thermostats are not accurate, as others have found. Key parts, such as sensors and thermostats are best replaced with genuine parts. Ask Tom @CreweAudi for a price.
Genuine means made to original Audi spec, for Audi. OEM means it might be made by the same manufacturer as the genuine part, but, importantly, not necessarily the Audi spec, to reduce the cost, an consequently the quality.
Mac.

Rule 3: DO NOT fit aftermarket thermostats, guaranteed to create tears at bed time. You might want to check whether it needs a new thermo housing, they get brittle and crack. Woosh and all your coolant has gone. Careful about who you get to do the work, Rule 2.

I notice that you are in London, the guys I use are in West Hounslow, B&F Autos Ltd. Hugely knowledgable on matters A2. They don't charge stupid money, give them a ring and ask for Gary.

They are a five minute walk from West Hounslow Tube Station.

Rule 3 should be extended to read DO NOT fit aftermarket thermostats or under-bonnet electrical sensors (with the possible exception of Bosch in the case of the latter).

Thanks Mate. I did get quote from Tom at Crewe who advised it to be £97. Was bit shocked with the price hence was asking.

Just an update. Messaged my local Audi and my contact came back with thermostat for £30.77. However, he asked me to find out the brand my current one is, FA Henschel or FA Himmermann. Any idea guys?

Hi H-M3
Not sure if this will be any help to you, your Audi garage should be able to confirm through your vin number which type was on when new.
Possibly it's been changed at sometime over the years but if you're doing the job yourself you could order both types with the corresponding thermostat cover .... the housing is common to both as I discovered ... take off the cover, see what you've got and replace it then return the unused one.

Here's a link to my post if you need it:

All the best ... Tom

Just for info, mine is a 1.4 BBY petrol manufactured May 2002 and has the 032 121 110 B Henschel with matching cover 032 121 121 K
Genuine parts bought through a Skoda Dealership for £30+ Vat (cover and thermostat)
The common housing for both types has one part number 032121111AM and made by Himmermann

Thanks Tom! My one is the same year as yours (GY02...) shall I just orde fronskoda
Hi H-M3 ... personally I would check with the parts department at the dealership against the vin code but if that's not an option then I would either take the cover off and check or order both and return the unused one. Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat or Audi should be able to supply a genuine part with your vin number or reg, Skoda were able to check and supply for me ... I also bought an aftermarket thermostat housing by Topran.
All the best ... Tom

Thanks Tom. Can I ask exactly where is the thermostat located on our models and if I remove the cover I will not lose coolant? Sorry if that sounds dumb🙈

Hi H - M3 ... apologies for the delay in replying ... looking from the front of the car towards the windscreen, thermostat is on the righthand side of the engine above the gearbox, you can follow all of the rubber pipes from the radiator and header tank to the thermostat housing and to the thermostat cover ... access involves disconnecting the gear selection cables and removal of two bolts from the thermostat cover (not as complex as it sounds and many guides for re-setting the gears on here and YouTube) .... you can drain and save about 1.5 litres of coolant into a bottle from the small pipe that leads to the top of header tank by disconnecting and idling for around thirty seconds (from a cold engine!). There's a bit of spillage when you remove the cover and thermostat and advise to put some rags on top of the gearbox to absorb it. Maybe buy a couple of new bolts for the cover, there's a good chance of them shearing off.
