1.6 fissi v 1.4 petrol

So I said I would do a comparison between the 1.6 and 1.4. Whilst Information is still clear in my mind, will add information on a weekly basis. The journey will always be the same..... including the potholes?

Week 1
1.6 fissi
I have been driving this car like Ayrton Senna for the last two weeks, it is so addictive. For this exercise only counting the last week. The fill up is based on brim to brim refuelling, using Shell V Power.

Mileage = 412.8

fuel used = 29.37 + 10 lt = 39.37
put the extra 10lts in case I got stuck in a traffic jam, besides had 40+ miles to travel (not many pit stops on M77)

Actual mpg = 412.8 / 39.37 * 4.546 = 46.72 mpg

Considering how I had been driving/accelerating etc that is good. The car dis displays 48.6 mpg

The car has been running on 15” pepper pots therefore, combined with suspension the potholes and the likes has not been a problem. Road holding in general has been great. So car has been used daily on a return journey of approx 90 miles (slight difference on return leg as it is marginally shorter over five days. No excessive engine noise on high speed runs. Very impressed really.

The next five days I shall be driving 1.6 fissi like Ms Daisy (no offence Ms Daisy) ie no severe acceleration, with speed kept at between national limits ie on motorways 50 to 65. This is mainly to be fair with the 1.4 which shall be used a week later and to see if my driving can improve the Fissi’s mpg ( not that I am unhappy with mpg, I think it is great)

Week 2 1.6 fissi - fuelled brim to brim Shell V Power

Just finished the second week. Need to fill up this weekend to add the stats.

mileage = 427
fuel used = 30.29 + 10 lts ( same reason as above)
Actual mpg = 427 / 40.29 * 4.546 = 48.18

The car this week has performed admirably, very impressed with its poise and road holding. Has kept up with traffic without a hitch and everything has worked as it should. Must say the symphony system is really good (had this in an Allroad years ago), I forgot how good it actually is, far better than the system in the Saab. Also, we must remember that the purpose of this car is to put on the miles back and forth to Glasgow. Car was more or less kept at 3k revs. Therefore, most of the run was between 60mph to 70mph. The dis has been reading 50.6 Therefore, I do not expect the miles per gallon to be vastly greater than week 1.
The difference is 1.46 mpg.
To be honest, my advice would be to drive the fissi as in having fun, to drive like Ms Daisy is truly boring. Fissi expects to be driven with purpose.

Week 3 1.4 petrol

Starts next week. The 1.4 might be at a disadvantage to the 1.6 as the 1.4 has the OSS. I really need to take this into consideration when the conclusion is done. Today I am on the second day of my commute, I have decided that at this moment in time it is at a distinct disadvantage, namely 17” Replica RS rims (tyresize: ) and the weight. Could also do with new rear shocks. So soon I shall put the pepper pots from the fissi onto the 1.4 and see what happens then.

Be interesting to see the comparison. Just bought an fsi a few days ago and surprised how economical it was on the journey home . Drives so much nicer than my diesel A2 and I reckon is only about 10mpg less.
Managed to get the dis to display 50.4 today however, speed kept 60....65..... filled the 1.4 with Sainsbury’s Super unleaded, getting it ready for next weeks run.

The fissi is indeed a cracking motor….. despite it problematic nature and engine management faults.

Care to expand "despite it problematic nature and engine management faults" @JavaGreen ?
Mac.
The statement I made on the fissi management might be a little unfair. My fissi has the yellow management light on, been on since/when I bought it however, the car runs like a peach of an engine. Will find out what the fault is soon/clear the fault. Seems like many on the forum have decried the fissi for sensor faults or other. Mine has done over 1600 miles in a month, really like it. I have cut short the 1.4 doing the same journey after two days as the fissi is much better on the motorway?????????

I have 3 Fsi,s, the engine lights are mainly to do with emissions, such as EGR, Manifold flap, NOX sensor, nothing that Proboost ECU combine with Tesco premium fuel wont sort out.

Afternoon. Useful thread this given I have just a hint under a quarter of a tank in my 1.4 Petrol with OSS, with no petrol stations open near me ? and I’m trying to figure out how far I can get to the next few petrol stations on my way home from Bath to London tomorrow. How many miles do people find they get on this model? Cheers. Al

34 or 42L tank?

Our AUA with 34L tank would go somewhere beyond 250 miles if I was driving it. I suspect probably over 300-320 on a decent journey and maybe further if continuous, however I never get a chance to drive it that far as it is used by my other half for local journeys only and she has very heavy feet so most of the year it is 230-240 miles when it needs to be refilled (fuel light on).

Your mileage will almost certainly be much better than the above, especially if the 42L tank.

If the gauge is showing a 1/4 of a tank then somewhere around 85 motorway miles based on a 34L tank. That’s what I get, at least.

Thanks all.

@Robin_Cox thanks for the knowledge, good question, how do you check which it is? It’s a 2005 1.4 if that makes any difference. Cheers.

Mileage: 174.2
Fuel used: 18.12 lts
Actual mpg: 174.2 / 18.12 * 4.456 = 42.83 ??

This was a surprise, car was driven on same route albeit over two days rather than the five. Speed was kept to National rules, car was driven sensibly and traffic was very similar to the previous two weeks.

Conclusion.

The 1.4 was at a complete disadvantage due to the extra weight of the OSS and indeed, the difference in HP could be felt on the hills to/from Glasgow. I shall at some point fit the pepperpots from the fissi (once they have been refurbished) to the 1.4 and after I have replaced the rear shocks to improve the drive etc.

The 1.4 is totally adequate on the motorway or in town still, it boils down to preferences. If I had a choice of which car to drive on a daily basis…… the winner is the 1.6.…. No doubt about that, it has fun factor galore. This particular fissi is one of Mr Broons and my goodness….. does it go?????.
It has done 105k miles and does need plenty of care and attention (I am without a doubt Mr Broons sold this in perfect condition) however, having been used/left in Edinburgh streets for a couple of years it has become wanting of a little tlc.

The 1.4 belongs to the wife, it is in very good condition and warrants the tlc it will get (mainly sound panels etc) the engine/gearbox is very stiff (feels like new) whereas the fissi is much, much looser.

1.4 when improved just might surprise the fissi next year….. the gloves are off?????????

I just did not expect the fissi to have a better mpg. I used garmin to check the mph on the fissi…. It reads +2 mph. Need to check the 1.4 at some point.

I've now got a 1.6fsi and 1.4tdi. The FSI is great to drive (although needs revved) , more refined and economy is still impressive . The tdi is still about 10mpg better economy and obviously a lot more low down torque/ power . I'll add the tdi is mapped so the two are fairly close in hp terms . The FSI warms up far quicker than the tdi which will become a major benefit once the temperatures become cooler. The tdi is really only more beneficial when doing longer runs (my daily commute is 50mile round trip) . Shorter journeys the fsi would win .

0-…….. 000 fsi would win, the pulling power with 3500 revs plus it really shifts.

Really cheesed that I did not get JRs fissi… will see what turns up next year. Two colour storms for now and both petrol. Was thinking about the tdi however, do not really need one now as I have a Saab for long distance touring.

I read you notes with interest.
I find our TDi75 simply great as a long range vehicle.....simply 600 miles or so on a full tank is great...
Although, I am still dreaming of a lovely 1.6 for running around locally...
