1.6 fsi intermittent power decrease/loss and rough idle

Posted a while back on similar subject. Changed to high octane fuel. Problem never really went away and has recently worsened. EPC light comes on on and car idles roughly. Very slight tinkling sound in engine bay on idle - may be a red herring. Any other ideas of fault and cure in order of most likely first? Thanks.

Hi I think you will find you have a cracked egr feed pipe- corrugated stainless pipe that runs from the exhaust manifold to the egr valve. To locate this part look at the right hand side of engine it is approx 20mm diameter and runs underneath the high pressure fuel pump. The ticking you are hearing is the air leaking as the egr valve opens.
This is a common issue and usually occurs at 50k ish miles. The pipe is just under £90 and requires the fuel pump to be removed.
Hope this helps mike

Agree you might have that issue but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with rough idle / power decrease.
I have a similar problem which has not been solved yet.
I suspected fuel injectors - ran a lot of cleaners and even the one from wheeler dealer with no really good result.
Now I suspect valve lifters.

Try some petrol cleaning additives and maybe wynn's dip3 in spray too. ( cheapest option and good to start with )

Forgot to mention that computer scan is a must. Hope it will produce better diagnosis than in my case ( intermittent random misfires + intermittent misfire in cyl 3/4

Ah wpaul if you have those errors i would say from experience that your injectors are scrap. I had random misfires and lean running for over a year with it getting slowly worse especialy after clearing the ecu codes(ie base settings were way off) after having fuel filter-maf-egr-lambda probes-low pressure pump-high pressure pump-ecu-throttle body all changed with no effect. It was only the use of a bore scope the mechanic noticed two out of four bores were wet with fuel. So fitted one new injector and instantly better. So he fitted a full set and its been fine for neerly 40k miles. At no point did any error codes or info from live data surgest injector problems. The other big problem with direct injection is a build up of carbon on inlet valves and inlet tract--the bore scope showed very little on my engine. So i can only presume the fsi cycle must help in keeping that to a minimum in comparison to non fsi direct injection.
hope you get it sorted mike

The rough idle and power loss can indeed be egr pipe failure if the crack is close to the manifold on idle and over run the air will be drawn into exhaust and trick the lambda into altering the mixture enough to cause poor running. It is possible to blank the pipe off simply at the manifold but egr end will require a spacer due to valve assembly protruding into pipe. I am working on a kit to do just this mod but im waiting for these spacers to be made--i have the manifold ones. My kit will be far cheeper than the replacement pipe from audi and offer the benefit in not having egr soot entering the inlet tract.

+1 for injectors !

My car had similar symptoms and has just been sorted, well, almost.
Not more rough running, etc. But the EML light is still on, so it's returning on Thursday.

The mechanic dismantled all 4 injectors and had them cleaned and test. One was defective, so was replaced.
He told me the 3 others were still good, and at over £120 piece, there was no need for preventive replacement.

I was a bit worried it might be injectors because of their high cost. It seems that a trip to my local independent Bosch garage might be needed for an injector diagnosis. I am please to hear that it's possible to replace only failed injectors. I will change spark plugs before going further but also wondered about sensor problems but didn't know which one to go for first. Thanks for advice so far.

the bad news is that to access the injectors in order to remove them, there is serious labour involved :(

Are they at back of engine with lots needing to removed to get at them. I guess this means high labour bills if I go to my local garage? Is it easy enough to allow me to attempt myself or would you advise against?

I did not try to do it myself, mainly because I lack time and space to undertake these kind of things.
I won't say it's that simple. The accessibility is bad (work from behind and under, with the right tools) ; you have to replace some gaskets when refitting (intake manifold...)
I would advise against, unlike you are pretty confident with that kind of mechanic, and you can afford to have the car off the road for a few days.
