122 bhp but cutting out!

Hi everyone
long time no post
i have what was a 75bhp TDi SE and i had it chipped by Superchips. I could always feel it backing off under full boost before but now when driving over 3000rpm in 5th(it can be revved well past this in other lower gears but does not cut out, apparently the car can measure the load placed on it by monitoring the engine perameters to decide when to go into limp home mode. i.e going up a hill on m/way it will cut at 2900rpm, on the flat it will cut at 3000rpm and down hill 3200 rpm, so there is an ellement of intelligence to the problem) it will loose all boost and go into a limp home mode. Superchips suggested it was the airflow meter which i replaced (thank you Auto tek in poole, well recommended for this part, £80 delivered to your door next day service) It didnt cure the problem. We put it on the rolling road and it registered 122bhp at 3350rpm so it was overboosting for some reason. I think that the carbon deposits have now raised the compression ratio to such an extent that the car now detonates or something and this is what is recognised by the ECU which then goes into limp home mode.

Superchips are saying its a problem with my car but i think its a problem with their chip. They maintain that they have fitted this programme to every A2 they have chipped and never had any problems. They just want to turn the boost down but i think it may just be a quick fix for them that will leave me with a less than satisfactory car.

So i would like to offer anyone the chance to try my ECU and see if the problem is the same. I will not be held responsible for any damage that may occur but i have run this on a day to day basis for 2 years and my car is fine. In return i would like to try your ECU whether chipped or not and see if the problem persists.

Or if someone has a spare ECU to lend or sell that would also help. Your thoughts are more than welcome...

My suggestion would be to get the car over to someone that does custom rolling road re-maps, they may be in a better position to diagnose the problem and offer a solution.

Googling the other VAG group forums shows this showing up on other VAG engines, usually leading back to the Boost Control Valve being faulty and not bleeding off the pressure hence allowing overboost which is subsequently detected and reined in by going into limp mode.

Dear ULP
thanks for the reply but i dont think it is just overfueling but i do know what you mean about black crap out the back. This seemed to go when i did the timing belt and the timing went back to factory spec, the economy was better too and it revved better but the torque was reduced. I am thinking about a custom chip job and currently run a K&N also. What do you think Stealth can do that another chip company cant?

Aikon
good idea about the boost controller, do you know where it is, what it looks like or how to check it?

problem sorted

a big thank you to all the people who replied as i have now sorted the problem. There was a small bore vaccum pipe that goes into a green sleeve behind the turbo that had come off. Put it back and all is OK:)

Am I the only person who's a bit worried of getting 122hp from a 75hp lump?
I know they're tunable but surely not that far???

What has the torque increased to?

didnt read the torque unfortunately. it was a bit pipey to drive as like you i prefer the good torque pull. its not been that great since i did the timing belt so i will have to experiment with the settings on the slotted cam wheel
