15 inch Tyre Speed Rating

Hi,
Im currently on worn out 195/55/15 budget tyres. Going to switch to Michelin Crossclimate 2 I think as I see some folks here like them.
I can get 185/60/15 84H or 185/60/15 88V XL for about the same price. Does anyone have a thought on what would be more suitable?
or
I can get 195/55 R15 85 V for about €20 more per tyre.
Im on the standard A2 15 inch alloys.

Decision decisions.
Thanks
N

A car as light as the A2 does not need XL-rated tyre sidewalls. They will be stiffer on the 88V ones and will not ride as nicely as the 84H will. So the 84H ones are what you should go for.

As H is rated up to 130mph, and V is up to 149mph, it's fairly academic as the A2 can't get to those speeds!

You could in theory get away with M (81mph) ratings as the law in the UK prohibits speeds in excess of this, but to give yourself a margin, of safety more than anything, H is fine. As has also been mentioned, XL (extra load) sidewalls will make the ride harder.

I think it depends on the actual tyre (and how your particular car's suspension setup works with it) much more than the size.

+1 for going with the 84H version if it's the same price - however it's unusual to be able to find them priced the same! Where are you looking?

Black Circles are doing a terrific deal on the XL version at the moment - £90.70 fully fitted each is excellent value for money! I have these fitted to Audrey at the moment and they are excellent on Audrey's standard SE suspension setup that has been refreshed with Monroe Reflex dampers.

195 width is at the boundary of what can fit on a 5.5J wheel and perform safely. 185 would suit those rims better. Nothing wrong with 185/60 as a slight upsize on the standard 175/60, it won't rub anywhere and it will serve to put some correction to the known speedo over-read, although not remove all of it. You actually get slightly higher sidewalls with 185/60 than with 195/55 too, i.e. slightly more flex/comfort, but the difference you would feel when going between different makes/models of tyre would also depend on the relative properties of their rubber compounds.

thanks for that. My car has recently had the suspension refreshed with b4 all round, the spidan springs for the 1.4 petrol on front, and b3 on back.

Im in Ireland so looking at https://www.oponeo.ie/tyre-finder/s=1/all-season/t=3/van,car,4x4/p=1/michelin/r=1/185-60-r15
Waiting on prices back from some local fitters now.

Agree with the above, 195 is definitely too wide for a 5.5j rim, in fact 175 (which is the standard width fitted to those rims from new) would fit even better than 185.

I don't know your personal driving style or what you are seeking ride wise but another option for you would be 175/65 15 which keeps the width standard (presuming yours are the standard 5.5j 15's not the upgraded 6j 15" SE wheels) but increases the sidewall depth one size which would increase ride comfort and make your speedo read almost bang on whilst saving a few euros too.

If your car is on standard suspension and not lowered then there shouldn't be any rubbing issues to worry about with going with the larger size.

If you do happen to have the optional 6 spoke 6j wide SE rims I would probably go with the 185/60 size although 175 would still be fine and was in fact fit as standard on those too?

I don't know if you have tried Camskill and if they deliver to Ireland but that's who i use and they have a Michelin promotion so could be a good deal?

Edit; tried to post the link but it doesn't like it but here's a screenshot ?

Ooh that's a good deal! 4 of the 84 load rating CC2 185/60/15 tyres are priced at £307.20 delivered, but Camskill are offering £60 cashback on this if you buy before the end of tomorrow: LINK

You still need to arrange fitting etc. but as we're now talking a net total of £247.20 or £61.80 per wheel delivered, as long as you can find somewhere to fit for less than £30 each (most places charge £15-20) then you'd be quids in.

Hmmm. Ive to go to belfast next week. Does anyone know if 4 tyres will fit in the back of an A2? Surely they would.

For the record, the four tyres would easily go in the back of an A2. Sorry you can't take advantage of this offer but it's not a huge fortune in difference I guess. I've posted this deal in the spotted section for others to take advantage of however.

I could be wrong but i believe the £60 cashback on four tyres only applies to size 18" and larger. 15" to 17" would be £30 ?

Hi,
I was relieved to see your recommendation for the 175/65 R15 size as I got a pair fitted yesterday to 15x5.5J wheels.
Halfords were offering 15% off Goodyear Vector 4 seasons (Gen 2) so I thought i'd give them a go (rated at 84T)

So far so good but the temp is still quite mild to know what they are like in colder more slippy conditions...

That's the tyre size that I run and very happy with them!
