195/65/15 to fit or not to fit ?

So just a update on these tyres, I asked if they would fit and the general opinion was they wouldn’t fit or they would give you problems, but having had a conversation with a member who shall remain nameless, I went ahead and said I’d take the tyres so long as they would do the job, cost 40.00.
I then sourced a set of Golf mk3 GTI standard alloys 15” a steal at 30.00 and fitted the above tyres to them, I put them on today and dropped it off the jack, locked it over both ways forward and reverse, no problems at all, so I took it for a run over some dodgy roads and not a murmur or rub could I detect, so not convinced, tonight I took my partner and her sister in law to Tesco,s for the big Friday shop, so a full boot load of supplies and I made them both sit in the back for extra ballast so to speak, it was then at the limits of the poor suspension did I detect a slight groan when I deviated from the straight line prompting some body roll, anyway the ride was very good much more comfortable than it was and it seems to compliment the recent remap giving me more torque in the lower gears, also I think it looks great the wheelarches are filled better, yes so there we have it, I hope the post is of some help to anyone else

What on earth are your insurance loading your premium as a result?

Your speedo will be significantly under-reading your speed, which means that you are, in any case, illegal.

Apparently the legal position.

"The law for car speedometers in the UK

The UK law is based on the EU standard, with some minor changes. A speedo must never show less than the actual speed, and must never show more than 110% of actual speed + 6.25mph.

So if your true speed is 40mph, your speedo could legally be reading up to 50.25mph but never less than 40mph. Or to put it another way, if your speedo is reading 50mph, you won’t be doing more than 50mph but it’s possible you might actually only be travelling at 40mph.

To ensure that they comply with the law and make sure that their speedometers are never showing less than true speed under any foreseeable circumstances, car manufacturers will normally deliberately calibrate their speedos to read ‘high’ by a certain amount. As your satnav is not the designated device by which a car’s speed is measured, it does not need to incorporate any fudge factoring."

Folklore suggests most speedos over read by 5% so on the motorway an indicated 70 may be a true 71.4 mph with the larger tyres

Folklore is wrong. My A2 has 195/55/15 tyres and travels at a true 69 mph when the speedo says 70 mph, which is pretty much spot on. If I fitted 195/65/15 tyres I would be going at 73 mph.

But of course it's insurance that kills this stone dead, since insurance companies don't offer insurance where the speedo slows less than the actual speed.

Ok folks, so today I downloaded the app” Speedometer “ set it up to read out mph, and away I went and this is what I observed,
Phone app. Speedometer
30 mph. 27-28 mph
50 mph. 48-49 mph
70 mph. 70-71 mph
So either my speedo is wrong or the app is wrong, but I’ll use my Tom Tom and see if I can replicate it, until then argue amongst yourselves.

Further to my recent mph observations I took it a step further and decided to check speedo on my 18 plate Merc Vito with OE wheels and tyres
Phone App. Speedometer
27 mph. 30 mph
Seems like folklore maybe not be folklore and could be fact. !!!

All the recent cars - the Fiesta, Octavia and Swift - they all overread by around 5km/h. No ifs, no buts, they all do it. GPS 123km/h is speedo 129 on the Octavia, that's on the standard 205/55R16s, winter or summer. I know this because last week I'd been running my new Nokia GPS and it was regularly binging at me - the limits for "over the speed limit" in Here hadn't been changed so I was constantly within 1-2km/h of the "bing" moment.

Speedometers are set to underread and have been that way for a very long time. We used to have a Transit at work; it was a 2013 or so. And on the dash, there was an "Eco" switch. That would stop you going faster than 110km/h to save fuel. But it was set to a real 110, so the Speedometer would show 118, GPS 110... and the limiter would kick in.

195/65 will rub on full suspension travel in either direction, of that I'm sure. Speed bumps at faster than walking pace will probably result in evidence of fighting on the wheel arch liners, front and rear. Same on full lock at the front at higher speeds in reverse, you'll provoke it easily, You won't necessarily hear anything, either, as it's soft plastic.

I am very curious to see what it looks like - any chance of a picture with the wheels/tires?

Seeing as i have a hole rubbed through in my wheel arch liner using my standard sport wheels these surely rub on full lock? (then again i am missing under tray so liners might have more flop that you'd expect.)

I think it looks great, the fronts are not catching on mine definitely, the rears don’t either under normal circumstances, the offside rubs only when I go over a bump with a full load ( see my previous posts ) right now I’m in Windsor with two passengers and luggage in the boot for all three of us I replaced the shocks on the near side recently but not the offside I still have to change it for a new one, I reckon that will take care of it for every situation, any getting back to the look I’ll post you some piccys when I get back
