1st A2 project Black 2005 SE 1.4L petrol CAT D 34k miles.

I will look into changing the brake fluid.! For now I have opened up a drum brake to check the condition (they look pretty good inside) and give the drum cover and suspension a bit of a clean.

Tom,

Great to see you getting stuck into this sweet low mileage A2 your have.

Can I please advise you to purchase a pair of axel stands. The factory Jack is really for emergency use only, although probably plenty strong enough, I would also use a trolley Jack to get the vehicle to the correct height to place the axel stands in.

You have a cracking A2 there and it would be a shame to see it suffer damage from the Jack giving way or the vehicle moving off of it. Obviously if you’re under it at the same time then severe injury will be caused.

Before first use please do look at this thread (post #10 has a great image to assist) for correct jacking and axel stand points.

Nice to meet you last week.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks for the warning, I will definitely invest in a proper jack. Which would you recommend as a compact and good quality jack for a reasonable price?

Evening Tom,

I’m sure you’ll receive more recommendations soon enough but this from ScrewFix looks like a good purchase which all goes into a nice hard case:

I have a similar Halford set which is no longer available but pretty much the same thing and same price.

Kind regards,

Tom

I just got my 1st A2 and found out it was a CAT D. The car had been left standing for about 10 years and needs some love. I am a total novice in terms of being a mechanic so I am learning as I go. After some advice from @Rusty911 (thanks.!) I spent the morning with the car up on some wheel ramps wire brushing the wishbones and coating them in Hammerite. Here are some photos. If anyone spots anything which needs attention any advice would be totally appreciated. Thanks.!

Before you turn the engine over, do a few squirts of WD40 inside the cylinders so they’re lubricated up.
