Hi guy's, i have a 54 TDI (90) SPORT :D and i want to check the fuel performance. The fuel light came on today and it said 55 miles of fuel left, is this:-

1. An accurate reading from the dis?

2. Can i cause any damage to the engine if i let it run down to the last before i put fuel in to get a good reading of it's performance?

3. Does using redex deisel treatment or any other additive make the car perform better, and give more miles?

p.s. FIRST TIME OWNING A DEISEL, TAKES SOME GETTING USED TO AS MY FIRST REFILL IS DUE TODAY!

just have to share a little first fuel-filling history... :)

When I bought my A2 it had exactly 3/4 on the meter, and the previous owner never checked how big the tank was and just filled it up each time, (its a 2003 taken out late 2002) so I took the ride home and after two days of going back and forth to my work "the Light" came on... But since both my previous Audis (S4 -00 + A4 -01) had 8L left when the light came on and I only have 7km to work I let it shine for two more days. The next day I went to work thinking I'll refuel before leaving work (we have a petrol-station at the job).
This special day was filled with MASSIVE jams - because of the ongoing EU-meetings taking place here in Stockholm. My first devilish thought was "I better get home as fast as I can and refuel tomorrow morning", then the angel on my other shoulder said, "go fuel today so there wont be any problems, you don't know this car good enough yet..."
After a 100m trip to the petrol-station I filled her up and lucky me!!!
The meter stopped at 41.3L!!! :D

I guess that ment I have a 42L tank... Close enough??? In the future I wont let it go this far! ;)

Trip to South Wales

Yesterday, I drove from Manchester with a full tank of diesel, two portly (dare I say!) male passengers, a full boot of luggage and PPE workwear, to Merthyr Tydfil South Wales to visit a site. On the way back I dropped one of the passenger's off at the wonderful Great Malvern train station so the A2 was also relieved of his luggage. I then proceeded with the other passenger back to Manchester. My fuel warning lamp was on but I drove on for several miles with the fuel gauge at the beginning of the red zone. I decided to fill up at the BP in Knutsford (M6/J19) as I was not sure how much fuel remained in the tank when the gauge was in the red zone. Overall, I made use of Skipton's cruise quite a lot; travelling around 60-70mph but the journey back was fraught with congestion on the M6 around Birmingham. I had travelled a total of 401.5 miles and required 27.23litres of diesel to fill to the brim thus averaging 67mpg - fantastic car.

The best I have done in terms of MPG was 79.4 on a journey from Bristol to Manchester where I maintained a steady 60mph using cruise for most of the journey.

Its not advisde to let a deisel run out of fuel as its abit of a pig to reprime (get the air out of the system) but around the 50 miles mark is about right on the fuel light but that also depends on how you drive on the last bit of fuel, i normaly top up around the time the fuel light comes on
