2006 Sportback Steering wheel in a 2002 A2?

Hello folks.
I have just bought a pre-owned A2 1600 FSI.
I was happy to find it with the open sky, but no chance to find the leather 3-spokes steering wheel.

Since I have also a 2006 Sportback, I am thinking of buying a TT-RS wheel for the Sportback and, eventually, swap the A2 unit with the old Sportbak one.

My actual Sportback wheel is like this http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250593192849&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (but without paddles, so just plain).

I ahve found some general infos in the forum about the fact that the swap is feasible, as long as some wires are changed.
So, my question is (and probably skepton is the man for the answer):
- is there any trouble in physically fitting the wheel in the A2 (knob wise;
- if positive, as for the wires, which are the changes to be made? Can it by managed simply via VAG (I have 704 version) or is there stg which needs to be replaced or reassembled?

Please consider that the most obvious solution (bring the car to skepton) is not an option for me, considering the location.

Thanks to you all.

Well i've attached a pic of the TT wheel i fitted to mine and a pic of the connector on the back of the airbag, this wheel went straight on, if you look at the photo's on the link you posted the connector is different not sure if you will have to change this, But i think Mike (Skipton) who i asked when i was buying my wheel should know

Cheers Phil

Gianluca has PMd me and I've now replied.

Most modern Audi wheels will be a physical straight swap, but from an electrical point of view, they will pretty much all need modification from 2005 onwards.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks to both of you guys.
I have the light in my tunnel now .. and this tells me that, in case, I will have to simply swap with a TT steering wheel.
Any chance to get a hint where to buy one in good conditions at a reasonable price?

Any suggestions/links is much appreciated.
Thanks.
Gianluca

There are two versions of the pre 2005 3 spoke steering wheel so take care if you buy the airbag and wheel separately. I bought an RS alcantara wheel and TT airbag off e.bay and it was just a case of waiting for the right bits to come along.
I've attached a pic of my wheel so you can compare the profile of the airbag 'spokes' on Phil's wheel. They have a more curved shape than on my later version.
I think the early TT wheel was used from 1999 to 2002 and the revised shape ones from 2002 to 2005

Cheers lads.
I won't buy the wheel and the airbag separately, so I do not think I will have this sort of problem.
Too risky for a rookie like me on the matter.

So I understand that, provided wheel and airbag are bought in a whole, every TT model up to 2005 shold fit?
Am I missing something?

Being expert on the subject (after buying one wheel for yourselves), what whould you consider a reasonable price for a typical mintleather steering wheel with airbag from a TT?

200 euros?
;)

If i have the 4 spoke leather wheel, will it be a straight swap for a pre 05 3 spoke wheel, or even an A2 3 spoke wheel, obviously with the airbag?

The wheels should fit as has been suggested by Mike on this post. I understand that the electrical loom for the A2 three and four spoke wheels is the same provided there are no additional wheel mounted controls.
Mike replaced my 4 spoke with a TT flat bottom wheel but he had to perform his magic on a new wheel loom to accomodate the two stage airbag now fitted.
Fitting a later version steering wheel certainly livens up and modernises the interior even more. A slightly thicker rim is also a "good feel".

I don't like to break up the party, but there are (now) stories on motor-talk.de of converted two-stage airbags failing to detonate when they should have done (i.e. serious accidents); there are at least two cases from the information I've seen.

I do not know how the mods were done, I do not know what mods were done, but in any case, the change was to convert a two-stage to a single-stage airbag.

Your decision if you want to risk it. I will try and do some more research when I get the opportunity.

This is relatively new; someone over on the German forum wanted to invalidate his roadworthiness certificate and insurance and it came up that there have been problems.

Both look very similar to the TT wheel fitted to mine if you could get them to send you photo of the back of the Airbag and connector, will know better you could then check it with the photo i posted on this thread

Hi Phil, I did not even get an answer from the sellers about the overall conditions, so is's gonna be tough to get the rear pictures, i believe.. :)

I will indeed.
I am after a TT one at the moment, waiting for the guy to tell me the shipping charges from UK to Itay.
:)

I can add an additional pic of the wheel I am after.

Is there sbd who can confirm I can go for it?
Cheers.
