My last week of being an A2 owner methinks, been umming and arring and 99% sure I'm going for the A1 I've seen. Not sure of mpg at mo after reading stuff on the A1 forums so a bit unsure still at the moment, running costs like insurance are the same, and road tax £20 a year. audi-a1-hatchback-1-6-tdi-se-3dr-268716954-640x480.jpgaudi-a1-hatchback-1-6-tdi-se-3dr-268716963-640x480.jpgaudi-a1-hatchback-1-6-tdi-se-3dr-268716979-640x480.jpg

Just the small question of capital outlay, though ..... I was quoted £23,000 for a new A1 to my specification! I think that the A2 will be a future classic (like a Vespa VBB150! LOL!) There are not many cars with an aluminium body! As more and more get wrote-off, so the rarity will grow! They are already increasing in value! I feel that I am in something "special" in my special A2! Still, it's your cash to spend! Any purchase of that amount can never be justified on a financial basis .... there is never going to be a question of "payback", as there is with "economy mods" to your existing A2. A few features stand out ... pop-up sat-nav, mfsw ... but it's possible to replicate those with the A2 ... I've modded the dash and could fit pop-up sat-nav there (but I've got RNS-E) MFSW? .... No problem, just need one in "twist", and that is rare! If the cash is burning a hole in your pocket, then it is a good car, I suppose ....

Like David says, there's little to compare in monetary terms...

For me too, the A2 feels special. I look at Prius's and think ha, I'm as economical as you, and I'm not having to drive a frickin' Prius! While the suspension on the A2 could have been better, (demonstrated loud and clear when I use the wife's Honda Jazz) I do feel like I'm driving in something very special indeed.

I've got leather/alcantara, I've got Dension iPhone integration (thanks timmus-Tom), I've got climate, I've got parking sensors even (thanks eBay). I haven't got £20k tho.

As much as I admire the A1s I have seen, I don't know if it would have the same appeal. A different, posh, swish appeal no doubt... But a few years down the line I imagine that would have changed.

It's your call, your money. Why not, if you want to?!

A1 is by no means a bad car, but is it £10,000 or £15,000 more car than an A2? I'm not really sure, in the sense that I would rather spend that on something a bit more 'special' (God knows what though!)

At the end of the day, if it feels right to you, go for it

Cheers

Yes Spike I did ....... And love it. Not noticed the thread had replies so sorry for late update.

I've had it for about 3 months now and absolutely love it. Still miss my A2, see the odd one now and wish I could have held onto it. I got just under £3K for mine, 51 plate, 140,000 miles on it. I left the A2 reg on the car as well.

Fuel economy has been so-so .... less in cold weather (getting around the 60 mpg according to DIS) and likes the Shell V-Power (which I prefer). Just had its 2nd longlife service which consisted of oil & filter change. I also popped some 'ZX1' in it this time , and does feel a bit smoother to be honest, I have a small amount to pop in the fuel as well next time I fill-up. Its lovely to drive and the interior just oozes quality, tho some things are not as nice as the A2, headlining, carpet quality etc, but its all to keep the weight down in them.

Spike .... I'm on 4 weeks holiday at the moment so will pop thro and show you it if you free at all ?

It would be great to see you and the new motor. We are around most days but its best to ring before setting off. I'll PM you our phone number.

Cheers Spike

I went the opposite route and got rid of my A1 to get an A2.

Not that the A1 is a bad car by any means, they are good.

But they lack the character of the A2 and to me they are smaller on the inside, or at least they FEEL smaller on the inside (which is all that counts).

I found the A1 to be less economical than the A2. They talk about 70mpg, but I believe that is almost impossible to achieve and even if you could, you would be driving so slowly it would drive you nuts.

Across two years of motoring (17,000 miles virtually all motorway) the car averaged 49 mpg and I never really drove it uneconomically.
Several owners on the A1 forum also have commented on less MPG than promised.

So I am happy to have moved UP to an A2.

+1 Same here.

I went from a few A2's to a few A1's and now looking for another A2.

The A1 is not as Eco as the A2. The DPF filter is the main culprit.

I agree with Steve, the A2 seems like a bigger car too.

Ive been lucky on mpg to be honest, I do mostly motorway driving so had no issues with the DPF, a good blast is all it need, for town driving they reckon the petrol ones are better. as I said, I get 60+ mpg, altho on recent trip to Birmingham I averaged 56mpg, just before I had it serviced yesterday ..... off to York tomorrow so will see what its like. On a £70 fill up I get about 650 - 670 miles before having to dil up again.

Spacewise, my 6' son says its a bit cramped in the back because of the sloping roof on the 2 door .... but thats one place I'll never be :)

Oh and my A1 was even cheaper road tax than the diesel A2.
It was free and so was the congestion charge.

But as I say. I prefer an A2 any day.
I miss all of the toys I had on the A1 but I am speccing up my A2 to the same level.
And the A1 had every possible extra.

I miss my A2 as well ..... but had the urge to buy something, and the A2 needed money spent on it as well.

I refuse to pay Audi £500+ to activate the sat-nav tho
Planning to get rear windows tinted, and maybe to roof and pillars vinyl wrapped black
