288mm discs fabia VRs

Hi everyone,

some of you may know i upgraded my brakes to 288mm from a fabia VRS which are fantastic in every way other than my car failing its MOT today:confused: because both wheel bearings have exact same play with symptoms of a failed bearing.
Little disheartening as i had new ones pressed in and they have only travelled 4,000 miles. Im in a bit of a pickle have 10 days to retest and not enough day light to investigate. Mechanic is a sound guy I trust him and suggested swapping cv joints to Fabia ones as the hubs are from fabia. He tried to tighten up hub nut as a starting point to see if i hadnt applied correct torque but still has play. I trust garage but not sure which direction to go in now so i ask you guys for your input as im sure you feel my pain.

options are:
•Change CV joints to fabia ones. But i wont know for sure if this will work.
•try taking hubs off and reseating them to see if it makes a difference.
•revert back to A2 hubs for MOT then investigate at a later day as im pushed for time.

so to sum up mechanic says rear if bearing isn’t nipping up to CV joint like it should in turn causing play like a failed bearing.

any help greatly appreciated

If it was me Ross revert back to standard a2 brakes for mot and while it’s all apart check with a vernier your distances it’s sounds like exactly what your mot tester stated the bearing is not seating so you will be able to check this on removal of the VRS compare them side by side it should jump out at you ..hope it all works out that’s the trouble with these dark evenings ?..
 
One possible cause -
When the new wheel bearings were fitted did they use the special installation tool. Using a press in the traditional way loads up the bearings and indents the races, leading to early failure.

I can't see the torque of the hub knut applying greater force to the bearing than that required pressing it in if done correctly

Surely fabia hub is the same as A2

It is the steering knuckle that you need to change for larger discs as carrier is integrated on A2 knuckles

Steering nuckle? Sorry we all use different terminology track rod end..? If so i put new Meyle ones on. Agreed on tightening up nut but i can tick that of check list

Sorry Ross a vernier is useful tool to measure diameters depths bores etc ...you could have checked the items side by side to see if compatible..wish you luck mate ...Paul

We usually use skf vkba 3569
Fitted lots
Usually in excess of 60k without bother

Ok poor workman ship is too common nowadays or incorrect tool thanks. With failed bearings should i be experiencing rumbling too?
In all im going to have to change wheel bearings
 
Haven’t done anything yet. I have seen those before does anyone on here have one they would like loan me please?
ill try and swap over hubs to standard this weekend and investigate take lots of pictures for use to give your thoughts

I believe a member did say they had one available for loan, will try to find who it was.
 
With enough 'play' in a wheel bearing that you can feel, I'd expect to hear bearing whine.
One test is to dip the clutch and freewheel down a gradient (only when it's safe to do so). A droning noise which falls as the speed drops is a good indicator

This is whats throwing me as there isn't a distinct droning which i have experienced before. Fingers crossed for dry weather tomorrow

If you are stuck I have a wheel bearing removal tool that is suited to standard A2 hubs and should be ok with this task that I can post to you if needed? Its heavy but if I can escape work today I will post on a 24 hour service.

When fitting the new bearings, its important that the "barbed" clips at the end of bearing are not damaged and go home into the respective groove in the hub. These are one use as when you extract a bearing they are usually destroyed.

Let me know if you want me to send my tool over.
 
Hi Ross. I suspect Spike is right. As I'm sure you are aware it is well documented on here that failure to use the correct bearing installation tool results in very short lived bearings. I have the correct tool which I would be willing to post but the postal fees are likely to be about £20 each way (7.2kg). You can buy your own tool for £45......

Have you tried the fabia shaft in there? or simply a bolt with 2 washers to simulate pulling the two bearings together. Seems odd that a tight hub nut doesnt take the play out almost like the thread is bottoming out, tried a thicker washer under the nut?
