46.19 Litres is a 42 Litre tank???

I'm wondering how low you have to run to get this much in?
What I mean is last week prior to doing my fuel filter (TDI75), I ran the tank down low, in that the DIS was showing 10 miles range, I remember from my first A2 back in 2002-2005 the most I travelled was 50 miles after DIS showed 0 to go (-50). In my current car I went -15 miles, plus the fuel that came out the filter housing say 1/2ltr, at the fill up it took 37ltrs (42ltr tank) including 3 extra "clicks", my every day average is around 65mpg, so in this car I can do around -100 miles (DIS shows 0 and then do another 100 miles), have others seen the same? note when my tank is full the gauge shows full.

It is true that the tank sender was reversed sometime in 2003, but this did not align with the change to the 42 litre tank
Paul is correct. The change in fuel tank volume and the change in fuel level sensor opperation did not perfectly coincide. You will find 34-litre tanks with the later sensor. All 42-litre tanks have the later sensor.

Cheers,

Tom

what are the consequences of running out of diesel in the A2? would the fuel system/pump need to be bled as seems to be standard? would be fun to test where the breaking point is but when it starts crying hungry i just go brim it as the beeping annoys me too much on start.

I did carry a can the other week just in case, as it was the first time I had run the car down that low, now I've got confidence to take it lower!
I regularly do 1000 mile+ weeks so it does make a difference to me.

My friend ran his car a 1.9tdi Passat on vegoil he bought the car on 190k didn’t service made it 100 miles before fuel filter blocked starving the fuel pump and killing it in the process, I don’t think it’s too good for the pump to run it dry.

OK so I have done some more testing, and I'm now happy to go 50 miles after DIS say's 0. With the 2 x vent method I then filled up with 43.3lts of fuel, I got 100 miles before i could see any movement in the fuel gauge at all, so that seems to ring true that I fitted 4-5ltrs in more then normal, if the max is 46ltrs then I still had 2-3ltrs in reserve, so that's great news.
