53 plate 1.6 FSI

Just bought my 1.6 FSI, it came onto our forecourt this morning (we are a Classic Aston Martin specialist) low on coolant due to to leaking heater hose, low on oil due to the oil doing quite a lot of the cooling so it came at a very reduced price. Wanted one when they were new & wanted one ever since. Are the heater hose pair from the engine to the matrix VAG only.

As above the death pipe as coined by this forum seams to be a pipe that can let go. Congrats on the fsi hope it's in reasonable health? I'm sure If you need engine to matrix hoses A2's Steve who breaks A2's over in wales will have the parts you need.

thanks, will check the 'death pipe', can it be made in Alloy or Stainless Steel, we build race cars & if I can't get them made I can find someone to make some. Similarly the heater hoses can be made in those materials with just 30mm to join to the matrix & 50mm to join to the engine to allow for movement & vibration.

just got the car on a ramp as I have been very busy with work, no wonder the guy who sold it me said it wasn't reliable, from underneath at the rear of the engine there are bolts missing, the undertray has some hex screws missing, different sizes of hex, different styles of screw.
It all smacks of poor maintenance, the radiator end of the top coolant hose has been broken, heat damage on the plastic then poor maintenance.

Sadly i do believe that most of these cars are serviced by monkeys now and are coming up a few kernels short of a peanut.

However, i wouldn't mind waging that in the right hands, ie yours, this downtrodden Fsi will all of a sudden start behaving its self and becoming the swift smooth cultured machine they are.

On a side note. I'm sure if u had a 'death pipe' fabricated out of stainless or alloy then please keep us informed. As it could prove to be a very good mod for the fsi owners. It involves a lot of work to remove it.
Good luck with your fsi
Steve

Having had an Fsi and driven over 160k miles in it. The death pipe much like a lot of Fsi issues is being overly hyped. I had a new one fitted when changing the thermostat housing early on in my ownership. The old one was still fine and never had an issue. Much like the “Fsi eats cool packs”. No they don’t if you use good reliable branded ones. I had possibly 2/3 fail in all the miles on my one but once I fitted a set of Bosch ones a few years back again no issue.
Love the Fsi and miss the Rev ability and flexibility of this great engine - still think it’s the best balanced A2. Cheers mike

I understand and agree with mike A2 sumo's comments. I had a 2002 Fsi from new and had a few coil pack replacements (Audi supplied) in the first 5 years, but they were pretty-much OK after that. Moved the vehicle on in 2015 after 13 years 133k miles, still on original 'death pipe'.
Replaced it with a 2004 Fsi in 2015 and have taken it from 60k to 100k miles currently. Had one coil pack replaced in that time. Tony at A2 Cars sorted out a manifold flaps problem in 2016, replacing the death pipe as a precaution. I saw the pipe he took off and it was brittle.
My conclusions: coil packs from a reputable supplier are now good. Death pipe does get brittle and I think you are particularly vulnerable if it's disturbed.

Its not really about how often they fail, its about what happens when they fail.
I just enquired about top & bottom hoses, nearly £160.00 + vat for both of them, we supply a full silicone hose set & stainless steel hoses clips for less than that for most Aston's, 1950 through to 1988, Audi's are hardly Aston's.
I'll make them with stainless radiator fittings & the top hose tee piece & moulded silicone hose, all just because its the correct way of doing things.

I've been reading the fsi comments here and in other threads and many are overhyped. You have to ask yourself why? The comments about fsi coil failures and the fsi eating coils cannot just be laid at the a2 fsi door. At the same time, early 2000's, all Audis across their range suffered with awful coil pack issues with them failing when new and whilst still under warranty. Audi at the time made a mistake and cost cut too far, which is ironic. Audi think their parts are better quality today than Aston Martin and Jaguar as they're so much more expensive like for like. Well they must be right? Lol. More like Audi and its marketing department have done a good job brainwashing us into thinking we're getting a better product than the best of the rest. I do like Audi's but feel held hostage when i need parts sometimes.

AML, Jaguar & Ford also had massive problems with coils, long since sorted. My point is the price of my goods has got nothing to do AML, these are my prices for very high quality parts that I have made, some of the very specialised parts we sell to AML.
Not some overpriced version of a VW which, if you go to any automotive machine shop across the land, are amongst the most unreliable cars in Europe.
This is why I like to make our own parts, because quality matters to me, being able to get in a car at 10.30 at night, drive 3000 miles across Europe without it failing, that's what I have done with our own Aston & a great many customers Aston's.
Always liked A2s, Audi's in general but shocked how unreliable they have become since my father bought his 1st Audi 100 GL in 1973 or 74.

Bruno I'd personally agree with you that Audi have always 'milked' their parts prices. The 'good' news for an A2 owner right now is that there are plenty of good secondhand parts around (as more and more A2's are scrapped). Prices from some of the helpful sellers on this forum are very reasonable and there are some good sellers on eBay. There are also some very optimistic people on eBay who from their pricing clearly think they are Audi dealers!!!
But as somebody said above - you might have a ready market on here if you have the means and / or the contacts to fabricate very good quality alternatives for some of the more overpriced (by AUDI) replacement parts.
