6 speed box in a TDI 90?

Got a call from Rob (WOM) this afternoon to say the MYP box is in, along with new DMF and clutch, and all's good. He thought that all my troubles were down to the gearbox, he inspected the cables and thought they were excellent so left them alone. Looking forward to collecting her first thing tomorrow ?
Sounds like a great outcome Malcom,

Enjoy the refined drive home Sir. You won’t regret this choice at all. Which starter motor did you opt for in the end.

Kind regards,

Tom

Yep looking forward to it and will try and drop by @andrewgeorge on the way as he's very interested to see the outcome. Picked up an MYP starter for a few quid on ebay

Picked up Gracie this morning from WOM and just got back home. I’m very pleased with the result, she’d feels quite rejuvenated. Hugely impressed with Rob, very switched on, what he doesn’t know about A2s isn’t worth knowing. My observations, which probably don’t come as much of a surprise….

The gearchange has a very short throw, which I like, though the first time I selected 2nd the movement seemed so short I was sure it couldn’t have gone in, but it had. It’s quite notchy, not fingertip light like my Polo, but it‘s got a nice mechanical precision. Rob thought that, being a reconditioned box, it might take a little while to properly loosen up so we’ll see. But even if it didn’t I’d be perfectly happy.

The clutch feels incredibly light, I don’t think I had realised just how heavy the clutch had become so it was a bit of a shock - a nice one though.

The new starter motor (£20 on ebay from a Passat) has improved starting, feels much stronger.

I can understand the comments about the MYP gearing. The natural urge is to select 5th when you’re in a 40 limit, however the engine feels like it’s labouring just a little so imagine I’d tend to use 4th more, which is fine. 6th is certainly very relaxed on the motorway, though I never felt 5th in the old box was too short, being a TDI 90. And I averaged 60mpg on the journey (going 70 most of the time) which is a decent improvement over what I used to get.

As I mentioned above, the cables weren’t changed. They thought mine were actually in excellent condition. So the ones I picked up the other day will shortly be for sale.

Overall I’m a very satisfied customer. The main thing is that (touch wood!) my gearchange troubles are a thing of the past and I’ll be able to keep Gracie for sometime longer. I need to because this has been a fairly expensive exercise, though I’m sure it will be well worth it. Need to finish the job off with a replacement gear knob…. Suggestions welcome (my wife wouldn‘t appreciate aluminium).

Well done Malcolm :) I'm glad you like it and WOM's excellence needs no further mention by me, it speaks for itself!

Regarding the gear knob, you can keep your current one and just replace just the 5-speed gear pattern emblem on the top with the 6-speed one from the appropriate VAG model. It's been done, you'll find the details on here somewhere.

Well done and good write-up.

So to labour a point (sorry!) the reason I was trying to get you to go with a PTW is that urge to change up at 40 simply wouldn't be there, as the revs would be about 12% lower (from memory) and hence you'd only want to change up to 5th (which is within a couple of % of your new 5th) when you get nearer 45-50mph. However as you have observed, this isn't a big deal and you get used to staying in 4th at 40 as that's what the car is most comfortable with.

Yes. I didn’t explicitly state it in my write up but basically I was agreeing with you ?. That said, I still think a good MYP with good provenance beats a PTW from a dodgy breaker. Had I found a decent PTW I’d have gone for it. WOM had never installed a PTW before however was discussing with Rob and he’s keen to take up the challenge of installing one.

Hi Malcolm,

As Tom @timmus found many years ago, the 6 speed gear knob badge from an A6 C6 fits perfectly.

Here’s what I purchased:

And fitted into Project OEM:

You’ll find a few on eBay and if you don’t mind waiting, sometimes a bit cheaper than I actually paid.

Kind regards,

Tom

is that a TT ring at the base with a TT gaiter above (I'm not talking about the gearknob itself)?
Its a modified TT Ring, stepped to fit neatly. The gaiter is the one which came with the gear knob.

Glad you are happy with the change, no pun intended.

@Didgesteve the cables may be coming up for sale as above if you are still looking for some?
Thanks for the offer Steve, but the Bookface group sorted me out with a set and a gear selector. Unfotunately the lcoal garage are struggling to know what to do with them, they've had the cables a week now and still no news on when the car will be working.

Shocking

One thing which I might have overlooked… when people have had their MYP conversions done, have they told their insurance company, and has this affected premiums? Same question with my pepperpots….

You should inform your insurance of any modifications to the original spec (often audio equipment is excluded from this). Some companies such as adrian flux actually offer discount to those who make modifications if you are of a sensible age as its an indication that you look after your car and therefore take more care of it.

The JDD gearbox, A8 Wheels and Votex on Tonka made no odds with Admiral.
