90bhp remap info please

@A2-Dork I often think about this for my ATL 90. I am put off because of a recollection that someone/somewhere suggested that remapping the 90 might lead to the demise of the Dual Mass Flywheel, and also the OEM intercooler. As my DMF is 15 years old, and the intercooler 8 years I always put it off.
I would love to do the equivalent of what @timmus did with my own car, but whilst it is still growing strong as a very original car, it seems a shame to change that.

DMF will wear out no matter what - i was surprised mine lasted a full 150k.
With lifetime of it as it is i would not call it a big issue - 370quid or so for a new LUK part, both clutch and DMF once in decade and a half does not seem that pricey at all. (about 1k with labor i suppose).

I can see why it would make a difference but at same time it will likely last at least another 100k on a fresh clutch/dmf i'd wager, that is not a bad deal for the extra power, then again it might actually wear out about same time rattling in there as it does, don't believe there are any definitive answers on that.

Really would not worry about a remap but i would get a new dmf/clutch depending on miles before a remap as mine was in a really really poor state.
 
£360 for the clutch and DMF and then £200 fitting (there are decent garages that will do the work for this price). So whilst £560 is not to be sniffed at, its not the end of the world.

I've just had mine remapped on the new clutch and DMF and won't be worrying about lifespan.

Wish i could find any near me, 60£/h labor seems to be the minimum around my area (guess it is near london all that) which was why i tackled it myself, that and having no faith in them doing a decent job.

No regrets though - now i know all the bolts are done up and all the bits and bearings are in excellent shape.
 
To clarify, my car is on 167,000 miles on the original DMF. As and when I have to replace this I would look at the remap. I have already owned the car for 10 years :)

@A2Steve did you stick with the original intercooler? I think you changed a previous car to one from, was it, a Land Rover

Hi Andrew

It was a landrover freelander alloy intercooler that I used on a previous project. That was far more modified and therefore probably benefitted from the larger intercooler.

From what I've read with polo 9n 1.4 tdi tuning (of which is much more common) the intercooler doesn't become a limiting factor until around 130bhp, so with just a remapped 90 it will be fine.

I'm becoming ever more conscious of environmental impact and so I think i'll be unlikely to go down the route of fitting a bigger turbo and seeking more power from my new project. A remapped 90 has more than enough power to keep up with modern traffic.

I know I should be driving a petrol if emissions are of primary concern, but I justify the TDI to myself by the fact its 14 years old and still going strong with a relatively low emissions output.
