A broken jewel - Urgent help needed: new rear axle, parts and advice...

Helly fellow A2 lovers!
Back in May, I've bought this little jewel:

Audi_A2_01s.pngAudi_A2_02s.pngAudi_A2_03s.png
Isn't she lovely? Is 1.4 petrol and had 118,000 miles under her belt when I bought it.

I knew that the rear axle is really rusty and I would need to replace it at some point in the near future, but I decided to postpone the replacement mostly due to the lack of time and money.
Last night, after 3,000 miles on the UK roads with me, the axle finally broke - at the point where it holds the left shock absorber:

English is not my native language and I'm still not familiar with all the automotive terms but I'm learning. :) I'm also new to the world of car parts and I don't know which ones (in terms of brands or makes) would be most suitable in my situation.

So, I'm seeking your advice and wisdom:
1. Probably I want to do an almost full overhaul of the rear suspension, replacing the axle, the shock absorbers the springs etc.
Which parts do I need? This is the most important of my questions because I can't do anything without parts obviously.
a) second-hand rear axle for sure - could I buy it from anyone here in the forum?
b) rear coil spring - probably new, any recommendations?
c) rear shock absorbers - again, new, any recommendations?
b) bearing and bushes?
2. What about the wheels - Maybe I'm willing to replace them as well - what am I looking for?
a) "Rear Wheel Stub Axles" - is that the correct term? I'm googling all of this now... :) should I replace these as well?
b) Drum brakes - any recommendations? Or I could try to replace them with disk ones?

Am I missing something?
Here some more photos of the damage and the rear axle itself:

I hope I would be able to buy the parts from the members of this forum, I saw that many of you deal parts, so I will put a request in the Wanted section of the forum but I need to know what I'm looking for.

3. I'm in Lancaster, any suggestions of a reliable garage here? I have the willingness to learn how to do the repairs myself but I don't have the skills, the place nor the tools. A strong will is not enough аlas. Any suggestions on the labour cost?

4. I guess it's not but anyway I'll ask - is it relatively safe to drive (slowly) to a garage?

I need to repair my little car as soon as possible, here at home we are all very sad at the moment, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Stefan

Feel for you Stefan but hopefully your A2 can be repaired quite easily. I use Monroe shock absorbers as they are reasonably priced and Audi fitted them from new as standard. There are members here who may be able to supply you with a rear axle. Hopefully they will be along shortly.

Thanks a lot for the advice, I will definitely check these. maybe along with Monroe coil springs... Thanks, again

Hi Stefan

Wow that really has rusted through. Lucky there was no accident as a result.

The simple thing to do would be to just replace the rear axle for another drum brake axle. Saves messing around with the handbrake and cables. With a 1.4 drum brakes are more than sufficient.

So you would need
- replacement rear axle
- 2 x shock absorbers (Monroe as suggested are good) The springs will probably be ok.
- If you are replacing the rear axle then I'd chnage both rear hubs/wheel bearings at the same time
- New drums and shoes would also be a good idea. (Try eurocarparts when they have a discount)

All that sounds good.
I will look on euro car parts website for hubs.bearins and drums/shoes.
Probably someone here will be able to provide me with a rear axle.
Thanks!!!

diagram for part numbers -

If the shocks are as bad as they appear, you might also want to think about getting the rubber sleeve that covers the shaft part of the shock and the seats that go at the top and bottom of the springs - they aren't expensive.

https://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a2/a2/2004-248/5/511-511010/

parts 3, 4, and 6 on this exploded diagram set. If you click the small logo on the right hand column with a left and right arrow, this takes you to a link with the after-market (for instance, Febi) part number for the pieces ; you can then search on Ebay for the Febi part number.

Apart from the Monroes, another option are Bilstein B4 rear shocks - these are also good.

Sarcho, I live about 90 mins away from you and can help you with a rear axle. If you want to inbox me and I will see how we can sort things out. I will have a look at the quality of it tomorrow, but from memory it was a really good condition axle.

Advice from fellow members....does a rear axle fit IN an A2? Would I need to take passenger seat out to deliver it? Cheers.

Hi,
I transport my fishing rods in my car by reclining the front seat fully backwards this may work for the back axle with suitable protective covers/ cardboard etc& secured with the seat belt & a ratchet strap.

Worth measuring anyway.

Keith.

I've got mint leather interior so a bit wary about reclining and putting an axle onto the leather....i'll get my.tape.measure out at lunch to see if it'll fit (said the vicar).
Cheers.

to be honest I'm not sure ... possibly you will have to remove the back seat and as kp115 suggested reclining the front seat is not a bad idea

I apologise in advance for the long post.

I've spent all the night browsing eBay for part and thanks to the diagrams provided by Robin_Cox I was able to narrow down the list to these below. Again, all this is new to me, so understandably I got confused by the different brands and prices.
and I'm a bit lost here because I'm not sure what should be a good compromise between price and quality. On one hand I would prefer to find the lowest prices since this is an unexpected expense for me for which I was not prepared. But on other hand I wont the best for my car and if my cheapest choose is of poor quality I won't go for it.

So, below I listed the parts I've found and would really appreciate your opinion.

I. First the parts for the rear axle and the wheels. Numbering as per "axle beam with attachment parts" diagram (https://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a2/a2/2004-248/5/500-500020/)

1] The axale: I've found an axle thanks to Clackers so this is sorted out.

2] Stub-Axle (6Q0501117)
a) (£70.74 for two)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Febi-Rea...049725&hash=item51e0af4d67:g:a1wAAOSwZVlXixJB
or
b) (£46.98 incl. postage for two)

7] Axle Beam Mounts (8Z0501541)

Do I need new ones or I could use the ones that will come with the new rear axle?

I wasn't able to find:
3] hexagon head bolt (combi)(N91006202)
8] washer for bonded rubber bush (8Z0505193C)

Do i need to look for and buy 9,]19],11],12] and 13] as well?

REAR BRAKE DRUMS
a)£94.49
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/REAR-BRA...chback&hash=item1c9dbaf797:g:cSEAAOSwLjxaVNRZ

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A2-...chback&hash=item46833d2c49:g:rZEAAOSwoYxbesFa

Or something else??? TBH, I'm a bit confused here. Also, from a financial poit of view I would go for the cheepest option if there is not much of a difference.

Do i need this as well: SHOE FITTING KIT £9.95?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A2-...chback&hash=item3ceb3cdeab:g:yiMAAOSw7BNZ4OLq

Is one kit engough for both weells or I should buy two kits?

II. Next, the absorbers and the springs. Again, numbers as per "Shock absorbers diagram"
https://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a2/a2/2004-248/5/511-511010/

7] Shock absorbers:

I found cheeper ones (different brands) on eBay but I'n not sure it worth buying them (quality wise).

4] and 12] SHOCK ABSORBER BUMP STOP KIT & DUST COVER
£21.70
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-FOR...292378&hash=item23a9b10165:g:YckAAOSwHUtax8Iv

b) KYB (£15.81 each)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brand-Ne...064224&hash=item3ad9ec1b1f:g:tD0AAOSw-JJafckk

I can see the paind dots on the left spring -they are four (probably they were orignally orrange) dots.
springs_dots.png
I can't tell how much dost are there on the right spring. Will I be Ok If I replace the springs with one of the two types of springs listed above?

6] 2x Coil Spring Rubber Bump Stop Rear/Upper 1J0512149B (FEBI 26620)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Coil-...448085&hash=item5d7ae3aa10:g:3H8AAOSwttVahZlB

I'm not sure wheter or not these are the right parts at all... :(
Am I missing something?
Please don't hesitate to suggest any alternatives (if possble cheepest because the the total sum frightens me).

Any ides about the cost of labor?
And finally, do yuo think it's sef to grive the car to the garage (really slowly)?

Thanks again for all you help.

If the costs are really adding up and starting to put you off, why not just take the whole setup from Clackers car and bolt the whole lot on. I'm sure Clackers can have a quick gander at the condition of the bits.

Changing the complete axle in one go is going to be a lot cheaper than overhauling everything.

The only parts you may have to buy new would perhaps be a handbrake cable and some flexi brake lines depending on how bad yours are but even then the garage could order these as needed.

Once in place and with you back on the road, parts could be changed individually as and when needed.
