A pump is starting when open door, not any more

Hi

my car will not start until a pump is finished pumping, see red arrow.

Last week the pump disided not to start when I opened the main door, but I could start the engine.

I have no clue what the pump is doing, but there is something to be fixed.

Can you help me out, and explain what the pump is, or even better give me some info how I can fix this?

Thanks a lot!

Greetings and welcome to the forum :) Pleased to say we have a few other Norweigan members too.

I believe from your profile I just approved that this is the 1.2TDI you are talking about? If so, they were never sold in the UK but fortunately one of our members @RAB is very knowledgeable about them. Hopefully he will see this thread now I've just tagged him.

Thanks for greeting me!

it's not that simple. When is the last time a GGE / Basic Setting was done? The pump is for the hydraulic tank so the gears can be changed.
Where are you in Norway? What have you already tried?

Thanks for answer Bretti_kivi

I dont know, and i dont know what GGE is...

The pump is for the hydraulic tank so the gears can be changed.
Thanks for info

Im close to Oslo, Nesoddtangen

I have not done anything yet, but I use the car to work, 4 km a day. Is that OK?

I don't know. I do think that if a GGE hasn't been done in the last, say 50 thousand kms, then it needs done. Has the car been serviced recently? By whom?

Thanks again Bretti_kivi

It has been on repair, but a more simple one, not an Audi service place. The repair was by a mechanic, but not an Audi mechanic. Changed oil, brakes etc.

Whath is GGE? Can i do it myself?

What is GGE?

GGE stands for Getriebe Grund Einstellung or Gearbox basic setting. Ideally it's done every year as part of the general service, and informed buyers ask for one to be carried out immediately prior to buying a 3L.

Can you do it yourself? The fact that you're asking suggests that you probably can't, at least at the outset. Is it realistic to find a well-established VAG specialist who can do it for you?

The GGE is done using Vag-com software, and to do it yourself you would almost certainly need a Ross-Tech cable and the associated VCDS software. Do you currently have access to VCDS?

^^ this. The parts in the mechatronic systems to change gears wear over time and there are various sensors and switches in place to allow the magic to happen. The GGE simply tells the system how worn things are and should be done on a regular basis.

The probable issue you have is that the hydraulic pump may have failed, the pressure tank may have failed, or a pipe may have failed, but it's also possible the system simply fails to tell the pump to start. In any case, without the pump running at all, I've no idea how many gear changes can happen before things stop working. The system is seriously complicated. A GGE simply shows that the system is running correctly (or not), that gear changes can be made, the values of the various sensors and switches, and makes sure that the system is in a usable condition. It is not a guarantee of long-term function but it should be completed regularly.

If you have a mechanic, check what was done last time and ask if a GGE was done. If not, I'd ask him to do one now.

If your mechanic also touched the rear brakes, please make sure they were replaced with the correct parts and that they are set correctly. They are 1.2-specific light magnesium brake drums and if I remember correctly there's a very, very small tolerance for the brake shoes or something along those lines. They are not to be treated as "normal" A2 brakes. You will wear out expensive parts very quickly if you do.

Hi and thanks again.

The situation is that the pump always starts when main door opens, this last week i have triggered it to start by switching on ignition, and it runs for 10 sec, before it runed for about 25 sec.

I can hear the pump start, but I can of course not hear it after engin starts.

So my conclusion is that it may be a bad connection, wich may incure at pre start , or it can happen again while motor is running.

One question arises: Is this pump running always when motor is runing, or is it only before start (like a pressure builder before engine takes over the job)?

Ross-Tech have two authorised distributors in Norway:

Their prices look pretty horrendous, you might be better looking around for a slightly older used cable that comes with unlimited VINs.

If you're intending to do your own maintenance, the purchase of a Ross-Tech cable is pretty much essential, given the very specialist nature of the 3L.

I go to worshop friday morning for a scan, hopefully I get further information.

You need to be clear as to what software is being used to scan your car. Only VW / Audi's own Vagcom and Ross-Tech's VCDS will provide a full analysis and the means of setting your gearbox. If your mechanic doesn't have VCDS you will either need to shop around for someone who does, or buy your own cable.

The Ross-Tech software comes as a free download https://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/current.php which runs on Windows PCs, but requires a genuine Ross-Tech cable to work

I called work shop, they have new instruments, but could not guaranty that gear system variables could be red... I cancelled.

Is there somwhere i can get this cable used?

I found this on ebay, but there is so many, and i cant be shure what to buy...

That particular cable wouldn't work.

You need a HEX+CAN cable in the USB version. such as this:: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vag-com-...an-Kit-Unlimeted-Vins-Diagnostic/202777195720
Make sure you buy one with unlimited VINS (or pay less with a clearly stated restrictied number)
