A sad day.

I hate to have to start another thread in this section within a day of the last one, but I feel duty bound to come clean and tell you all that I said goodbye to my A2 this afternoon after 20 months of happy ownership.

First a bit of back story. As I've discussed on here in the past few weeks, we recently sold our Skoda to a local car buyer. I was very impressed that the value we got was actually higher than the CAP valuation I had done the day before, so got chatting to the chap and he expressed an interest in the A2 and gave a reasonable offer. Thus the seed was planted in my mind and I went away to contemplate selling my car.

After a lot of thinking I decided to either 1) Spend a bit of time and money rectifying a few issues that I hadn't got round to, to keep the car in good working order - two rear tyres, new starter motor (the squeal!), dint and scratch removal, get to the bottom of the intermittent error codes and seek out a replacement for my ageing clutch. Or 2), accept the reasonable offer made to me, based on the above faults. In the end I decided it would be a better use of my time and money to let it go and let the dealer take care of these issues. At which point it should be a nicely sorted example to serve someone well for a good few years to come.

Now, I didn't do this without a plan in mind. I've spent the last 4 months researching what will hopefully soon be my next car. It's quite a departure from the A2, but I think it's just as special - and it just so happens there's a lovely, very low milage car for sale 30 miles from me... here's a clue!

I've always been of the opinion that as an enthusiast you should own, or at least experience, as many 'great' cars as you can.

All that remains is for me to thank you all for your continued advice and assistance over the last 20 months. It has proved invaluable and saved me God knows how much in simple jobs and repairs. I haven't been here quite as long as most of you but I do intend to stick around and help whenever I can, as this is easily the best forum I've ever been a member of. Maybe one day I'll make it to a social, if you'll have me without my A2!

I already miss it terribly. I'll keep you up to date with my next purchase. I'm sure you'll all enjoy how many MPG I won't be getting

Sam.

Sorry to read this Sam, but sure you've made the right decision for you. We have several A2OC members who attend socials without an A2 - so I'm sure I wont be alone in extending the welcome, and there's also no reason you can't check in every now and then to see how the club is doing!

You never know, once you get the GTi bug out your system another A2 may be possible in the future. Thanks also for your complementary comments about the club.

Best wishes and good luck with the new car.

Thanks Murdo. As it happens, my other half has already expressed interest in an A2 of her own! Sadly the time wasn't quite right for her to take on my car but let's see what the future holds...

Cheers

I didn't see that one coming. It'll be a shame not to see your posts appear in threads, Sam.
It's good to read A2OC getting such positive reviews, though.

All the best with the GTI. :)

Thanks Tom. To be honest, neither did I until about a year down the road, but I have that 'gut feeling' that now was the right time.

Cheers

Hey Shreddedmeat,

Your the 2nd person this week breaking the news of letting the A2 go.:( But as I said in the other post I wish you many happy miles with the GTI and who know's that gut feeling may put you behind a A2 Once again with a spec even better... :)

here's to both the GTI & A2...........................Cheers

You could have kept the A2, not bought the Dacia and then got a Mk5 GTI!

Nice car, it's on my short list of replacements for the Citroen (well, a Mk6 is) and I'll be sorry to see your contributions diminish too.

I think we're getting our threads confused! We didn't buy a Dacia - the Skoda got replaced with a MK6 Golf, but that's not 'my car', it's for my mum. I was just 'technical advisor' for the purchase :D. So the GTI is a direct replacement for the A2 :)

Some great MK6s out there at the minute, but 2nd hand values are still relatively high for me.

Cheers!

You're right, I am!

The bad news is that when your parents visit people might confuse your place as Benfield!

If the VW emporium is anything like my Dad's experience of Benfield Honda in Stockton, you and your mum need to find a decent specialist - but they are now part of the Evans Halshaw/ Strastone ('spit') group so what would anyone expect...!

We have Pullman VW just down the road which is handy. MK6 is coming from Lookers VW in Middlesbrough who I can fully recommend if you need a dealer down your neck of the woods.

I completely agree. I try to do the same. It means that sometimes you replace a car with one very different and thereby surprise people who don't share this approach. It is the reason why I bought my A2. It replaced an Alfa GT, bought for the same reason. Few people understood why I made that swap, but people here probably do.

Just thought I would post my old car for sale now, mainly so you could all have a laugh at the hilarious pricing :)

Without revealing exactly what I was given, you can take a grand off that and they'll still be making a decent profit. I suspect they can use that price to give inflated, attractive part-ex values so people think they're getting a great deal.

Cheers

p.s. the GTI is here, I hope to have some photos for you soon!

Have you seen the new golf gti ? Stunning !!!! Have fun with your GTI . I have just ordered new Mercedes B Class Sport , so the Audi will be garaged and stored away , I haven't got the heart to sell her .

I've seen one but none on the road yet. It's quite a looker! Enjoy the B-Class, I was meaning to say in your other thread that my sister's A180 arrived - stunning car with compact but fabulous interior. Hers is the 'AMG Performance' I think, gets big wheels and red stitching on the part leather, just lovely :) haven't driven it yet though.

I've lost the charger for my Canon so no GTI pictures yet :D

I did exactly as you did...but went the 4motion root, sold my fsi A2,just 2 years later and also just sold my T4 camper van im again the proud owner of my tdi A2,they really do get under your skin....but im sure you will be happy with the golf, great car.
