A2 1.4TDI AMF 75hp - Alternative Air filter box

Do you have a good proposal for an alternative air filter box for my AMF ?

My A2s suffer from wet air filters. I have no idea of were the ingress take place. All air filter boxes have been dismantled and inspected without any findings.
Wet filters reduce efficiency and increase fuel consumption.

I want to move the filter location to the upper engine compartment area to get it out of the wet-spray zone and to be able to inspect and change filter without having to take off the skid plate and lift up the car.

Any one that have done any similar already ?

Polos with AMF's have such a filter. Biggest problem would be where to put it in an A2.

Did you do this job?
Puddles are getting more like rivers these days

Perhaps all academic now as old post.

Have you carefully checked the lid ( base ) of the filter housing? If the screws have been overtightened in the past the insert can pull from the housing and the lid does not seal properly. Carefully check the mounting locations as they have been known to split. Also if your lid has the small drain hole in it that may be working in reverse. Do you have the right hand wheel arch liner and undertray in place? All else fails you could wrap the filter housing in cling film to attempt to waterproof it more. That is assuming the water in not coming in from the fresh air intake and pipe.

7A5B3 - have not found a good alternative air filter housing location for a standard AMF/BHC
I have found a solution for my project car Letty but there several components are removed so irrelevant for a standard

You shouldn't need to do this! Something is wrong if your filter is getting wet.

I would remove the filter box and inspect - you'll find there is a crack or the lid has distorted.

Hi audifan
This is definitely not only of academic interest for me so many thanks for very valuable input
Had to buy another AMF last week. (No service records, horrible condition, 160'miles+ but cheap...) it was placed on four stands and all service parts were stripped. One of the first findings was an air filter that were very dirty and wet...
-drain hole not clogged (same for all of my five A2s)
-right hand wheel arch is checked and mounted correctly
-undertray is fitted to three of my five A2s, on two of them the vertical lip is broken off... that could be an issue
-no visual cracks but two of the filter housings have broken brackets
-no sign of condensation inside hoses

I have been thinking a lot since your relay and after checking your proposals...
My last desperate attempt to find the reason was to pressure test the system, from the filter box to the turbo. I plugged the air line at the turbo inlet with a rubber plug and pressurized trough the bleed hole in the lid. The lid was the first place one could see air coming out at the hinge side.
It could resist 4-5psi so one should not expect water ingress here. To my opinion a very good result.

Must admit I am a bit stressed wrt not being able to find out something so simple as this...

I fully agree that this seems very strange and that i might miss something very basic.
My hope was that the pressure test that I have performed should reveal any defects?
What do you thing?

Just to clarify.... I do not use my A2s like this...
