A2 1.6 FSE in Garage

The oil light came on and went off, I didn't check the oil level straight away as I had recently had a service. A few days later it came on again, I checked the level and there was no oil. I topped it up and it ran ok for a day then started missing and smoking slightly (white smoke). I drove it to the garage and when I got about 100 yards away a backfire and lots of white smoke. So I'm awaiting a call to tell me the worst. I don't want to be too pessimistic but I don't think it will be minor. I love the car so if it is the worst and it needs say a new engine Ill sort it if its within a reasonable price range. Although I may have to cut my losses and buy a new A2 I've looked on line at possible outcomes but Ill wait and see. Ill keep you all posted.

Unfortunately that sounds like serious engine issues, but gotta wait for the mechanic's opinion.
When I get my car back from garages, I check what they did. Literally every time I gotta go back and complain, as either they put the alloy cap back wrong and broke the legs off of them, happened twice 🤬 also they knocked paint of the alloys and caps, which to their answer was, that's old paint so I'd just touch it up, or when they didn't align one of the auxiliary pulleys properly after timing belt change, and it was shaking for 6 months, and if I didn't notice that just before a long drive, it'd have came off anytime. Not good. Hence I fix things I can, so I know that's done properly. Like service. Last tkme I let them do the oil change, they added around +1 litre oil to the engine, which I'd drained right away.
Might be the opposite in your case. I'm not saying they forgot to fill it up with oil, but could be the reason, especially if you didn't see oil leak underneath, and the engine didn't smoke either.

Thanks for your reply, yes I agree its best to be safe than sorry and to check is always a good idea. I should get the feedback soon from the garage.

Just waiting for the reply from the Garage, I'm expecting the worst so I've been looking to see what A2s are available. I will try to get another 1.6 but open to the best I can get.

Ill keep you updated.

Hi All

I'm now looking for a new Engine 1.6 FSI and also will be looking to see what A2s are for sale just in case the cost is too much for the Engine replacement.

Hello Radian, I had the same problem with my wife’s FSI, using oil and eventually white smoke, (and not a Pope in sight).
After I towed it home, it turned out to be a split diaphragm on the crankcase breather system. I got a second-hand one from a VW-something-or-other and it’s been fine ever since. It cost me about £15. Don’t believe a garage that tells you that a new engine is needed unless the thing has seized solid!
I haven’t tracked down a diaphragm to fix the old breather yet but I have it in the shed.
If you’re anywhere near Amersham, just PM me….

Thanks Mickle the garage said it was piston problem, I asked them to sort it thinking it may be a new piston and rings. He said it was a big job and by the time they do that its probably worth getting a new engine. I have worked on cars a long time ago so have some knowledge but never renewed a piston so don't know the amount of work involved.

I have renewed an engine, Clutch, brakes etc in the past but don't have the space, time now.

New 1.6 FSI Engine should arrive today, booked in for fitting Monday / Tue. I'm not sure how long it will take to fit the new engine.

The latest the new engine is no good head gasket gone so the company said they would replace it. Good job I have temp transport.

Hi All Sad news I'm having to buy to my A2. If anyone is selling an A2 within 60 miles or so of Hull, please would you let me know
