A2 aerial connector confusion

I have a Concert II and this is what you should have in the boot, sorry about the quality but's overcast here.

Suggest you remove the jack and its polystyrene holder and see if you have cables there that should go to your absent diversity unit.

Yes, that is about right.

Ok sorry to go on about this, I’m trying to see for any signs of a salvageable system. There is no sign of those wires even into the next compartment under the jack. I presume that’s where they should run or stem from? Otherwise I can’t see any sign of how any such missing wires might even route to that area?

Thank you, now I wonder not only where is that missing unit but where are the wires. Which way do they route after that unit? I’d like to trace back to see if I ever find a point where the original are cut?

Ok this is weird. I think I just found it behind the rear boot trim take a look..

Jack removed

Hi, it looks like your boot has had some "work" done on it....

I've found a close up picture of the box showing which connections are where. The two right hand ones go to the head unit and in between is a separate power connector. The left hand 4 are for the individual aerial amps in the tailgate.

I helped a member who had no radio reception and it turned out that all the signal wires had been pulled out of the plugs, twisted altogether and then hidden behind the boot side trim! The diversity box was OK and when the wires were reunited with the correct connectors it worked perfectly! There is a lot missing in your boot though.

This is what it would normally look like on the back of the head unit:

I will have a look tonight and take a picture of the wiring route and post that.

That's promising. Its not meant to be there but everything looks present. Check the coax is securely pushed into each of the connectors as they can be separated and that the power is present. You can check the connectivity to the head unit on the larger two individual plugs.

Brilliant. Yes I think it’s been moved from the bowels of the boot and relocated behind the boot entrance trim to stay more dry.

My fear now is that because I swapped over the coaxial connectors, wondering if they had been soldered on the wrong way around, I have now send 12v where the unit doesn’t want it and blown up the diversity unit as it smells of burning electrics a bit. Do’h

May have done some damage I think, putting 12v down the wrong hole. Can I get these circuit boards easy?

Ooops - nasty.

I have a couple of Diversity units for sale currently. PM me if interested.
Ok great. I will try to see if it works, my thinking is I’ve blown 12v down the return coax not the main arterial input, I think that return coax is to do with the radio telling the unit to try another aerial if signal bad. It might work partially just won’t be able to switch around for best aerial as that input blown. Let’s see but might buy one from you if they are not too pricey. Cheers

I agree. That looks corroded. I would expect blackening and maybe some of the copper strip to be melted away from the board.

This looks more like when my friend put beer over his laptop and THEN charged it.

Wish me luck. I’ve ordered one from someone on eBay for £11 including delivery with three month guarantee. Hopefully when I plug it in, reception will be restored

Hi can someone technical help.

My recently purchased A2 has a concert radio with CD. It had very poor to nothing deception.

Investigating the coax leads behind the radio I notice the aerial leads have been cut and rejoined to both the round black coax connector and the smaller square orange one.
The radio outputs 12 volts from the centre pin of the round connector.

I wondered initially if whoever resoldered the two coax connectors on, got them swapped sending 12v down the wrong coax to the diversity, so I reversed and rejoined them. This I think blew the diversity and didn’t resolve the reception.

I resoldered the coax cable back to the original connectors but alas too late for diversity to work. I’ve just bought another one from eBay for £10 and my reception is still nothing, although 12v can be measured in the connector from the radio at the diversity end of the cable and weirdly the radio receives signal if I put the probe on the centr coax, simply being picked up from my multimeter probe wire when measuring the 12volts. But dead when all plugged into the diversity.

So now I wonder if either the new diversity is also dead or I’m starting to wonder if the coax leads are connected to the write connectors.

Is anyone able to confirm that the black round aerial connector on the radio end goes to the orange connector on the diversity end, which is the one nearest the outside edge of the diversity box?

So can anyone confirm the two circled connectors are joined? So the 12v coming into the round black coax connector runs through to the orange connector nearest the outside of the diversity. I just want to make sure I have the two coax connectors wires to the right cable. 12v is currently going in the circled coax on the diversity.

If it’s wired right then I don’t know why I can’t receive radio, perhaps my purchased diversity is broken as well but I’m loathed to buy another if the diversity isn’t the problem.

Greg

In my car these two are connected at each end of coax. Hope this is right as the coax cables have been cut and resoldered

Hi,

I can check the wiring tomorrow night and report back.

Two other things to check in the mean time:

Has the head unit been coded correctly for the Diversity unit?
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_Radio_Generation_II

Is the earth on the tailgate OK?
The amps in the tailgate use the earth of the tailgate frame to complete the power circuit. The earth wire to the tailgate can fray with opening and closing causing bad radio reception.
Try a jump lead between the battery negative and something on the tailgate.

regards

Andrew
